I configure IBM Servers and Datacentres, basically, people come to me and ask what they need to run to fulfill all there requirements, I then put an ePortfolio together of something that will fill it (anything from (£5k to £15mil).

Interesting mate, who do you work for?

Ever heard of Bluechip Engineering?

So that's 3 server dudes on the forum!! :D

A company called Arrow ECS.

I have had a few dealings with a BlueChip Engineering, but the ones I have dealt with are based in Bedford, not sure if they are anything to do with you?

Funny thing is, I'm cr@p with computers, I'm fine with hardware, but have no idea how to actually work half of the software.

Plant fitter/truck driver.

Not the most rewarding of jobs but I have built my Supra (save for the roll cage) with the knowledge I have attained over the years and so saved myself thousands in labour bills.

I did collect an overheating Ford F150 monster truck from a hotel car park at the far end of the country a couple of years ago which was kinda cool. I got to start it with a big crowd gathered and drive it up onto the back of my truck, had to fit the urge not to floor it and ramp it straight over the cab, the noise from it was GLORIOUS!:D

I work for Toyota in Derby. Just started a new role in 'Pilot' Group doing line trials for the upcoming new model Auris. Not a bad job, pays the bills etc. Just not enough to get a Supra yet :(

Do me a favour and have a word with someone there about stocking some Supra parts ;)

Good god, weren't the S80's withdrawn about 11 years ago? That's the problem with my job though, as I'm always having to deal with the latest kit, I'm always having to forget how the older stuff works.

I have to work with both heavily so I have no choice but it is a pain, espcially if you need to do a tape restore from 10 years ago through CLI, luckily I have a huge book the size of my car to remind the commands!

Do you get involved in Data Centre moves then Marc? So you do look at everything HW related like PDU, Air Con, Generator or do you mainly just focus on the IBM Server side? We currently have one Data Centre in Docklands (5 minutes from my house actually!), and also one in our MK office but we are looking to possibly have a 3rd so then we can have a hot & hot setup leaving MK as just a DR site.

Oi what about me? What do you think infrastructure and architecture means?

It means you do no work! :p

If it can't be done through IBM I won't get involved, I only deal with Datacentre moves if parts are getting replaced/upgraded. My main job is to make sure they have a fully working setup, whether it be a simple management server request or multiple servers to run x amount of VM's, all the way up to huge Datacentres that have to be fully encrypted and they give me IOPS requirements for each individual server (which can take a while when they need 60+).

I actually recently put something together for a very large weapons/aircraft manufacturer which will be going out for installation next week, which I must say I'm a little bit nervous about as the request was humongous and I'm just praying everything has been fulfilled.

Ah, I see.

Do you work as a contractor then? Or are you an employee of IBM? We are mainly HP based servers including storage (just put in the new 3PAR systems), but it is handy to know what other folks do incase you need them. :)

I am sure you will be fine mate, you are a very capable chap. Not like they will shoot you if end up killing all the disks on the storage side whilst testing them.... hold on, did you say they are a weapons manufacter?

I actually work for an I.T. distributor, but work solely on the IBM side of the business, I started here in the HP side but we lost the contract to supply HP, however, luckily a position opened up in IBM doing the same job and they are so similar it was just a case of learning different model numbers.

Yep, not much difference at all. I worked on some IBM kit whilst I was out in Zurich, quite liked them to be honest.

Do prefer HP server kit though, not a huge fan of the HP laptop\desktop side of things.

*Sorry for the thread highjack*
