Mattross1313
Hey Guys, Another question please. I ordered some rear diff seals from Toyota the other week and garage has just offered them up to the car and they don't fit. The leak is coming from where the driveshaft meets the diff and I have ordered the seal for dust cover for that area. the garage says these are far too small that what is on the car right now, but Toyota say that there is only one part listed as a seal for an Auto diff. When I bought the car I was told it had a TRD Diff (?). I have no proof of this, but if it was a TRD would it have a different casing? or would it be just the internals? The other option from Toyota was that a 6speed manual has a different seal? could it be that the car has had a manual diff banged on it at some point and this would have different seals? I am really rubbish at this type of thing, and VERY new to Supra's. If anyone could help shed some light on this for me I would really appreciate it. The chap at the garage is speaking to a local company who make up custom seals/gaskets.....who could help, but this sounds expensive. Thanks folks, Matt
Wez
The TRD diff would just be the internals. There are two casings though, not sure if they require different size seals.
Mattross1313
Thanks Wez. The guy from Toyota asn't able to tell me if the manual Diff had different size seals to the Auto diff. I'll hang fire for now incase anyone is able to confirm this
Mattross1313
I don't like bumping threads but ideally would like to know as much as i can by tomorrow as this is holding up the garage doing the work. Is the driveshaft opening and different on the auto to the manual? Toyota assure me that there is only one seal either end of the driveshaft, one for the diff and one for the hub. They reckon i have the diff-driveshaft seal, but it doesn't fit. Matt

David P
Big case Diff - B0xx-series 220mm ring gear differential. Small case Diff - A0xx-series 200mm ring gear differential. Mattross1313
Hi David, Thank you very much for the information! much appreciated. I have spoken with the garage and the VIN says A340E A02A. Which is a concern as A02A isn't listed? unless I miss heard, but I'm sure he said Alpha. Looking at the pics above, any my rubbish under-car photo, I can see cooling fins at the back of my diff? by the casing looks like if might be the small one as I can see the grooves in the body. I have already orered part 47008 but it is too small. I think the garage said that part is around 68mm OD but the diff requires 98mm OD. I think the ID is around 45mm? Mattross1313
Just re-looking at the two diff photo. are the cooling fins interchangeable? so I may well still have the A diff, with fins banged on the back?
David P
'A' at the end means an open diff, 'B' at the end means Torsen diff.

Not without re-engineering the back-plate, if it has wings it's a big case diff. Edited May 2, 2012 by David P (see edit history)
Mattross1313
Thanks again I was told this had some form of TRD diff, maybe internals. hopefully it has. I don't know much about diffs (can't you tell? haha) but an open diff is pretty lame isn't it? EDIT - Just had a message from the Garage and mine is the larger B series diff. which hopefully means it isn't an open diff too. Time to hit Toyota and get the right parts on order. Mattross1313
Oil Seals and Deflectors on rushed back order for Monday. So watch this space
David P
VIN code 'A02A' shows the diff originally fitted to the car was a small case 3.769 open diff. Looks to me like a large case diff has been swapped in, this could have TRD internals but more likely an OE Torsen. Big case diffs use a slightly shorter drive-shaft on one side, the near-side I think, if that wasn't changed when the diff was swapped that is what could be causing the problem. Mattross1313
Cheers for the further info most helpful. I don't suppose anyone knows the measurements for the long and short drivesharft? And where to measure from etc. would like to get this all confirmed before putting it all back togehter, incase i do need a shortd driveshaft! Mattross1313
Just done some searching and found the part numbers. I then spoke with the garage and he can see that the passenger side driveshaft is shorted that then drivers. So it looks like the diff swap on mine was done correctly Now to wait for the seals to arrive on Tuesday, and get everything back together ready for Japfest.....cutting it fine!!
