Question for the NA/T guys

Do you run with the distributer or with coil packs? Distributor, will be going Coils soon.

Can it be run either way? Yes. Dizzy or Coils is a form of ignition but both do the same job. Ignition has seperate chamber control where the dizzy does not have as much control over seperate chamber ingition timing.

And what is involved converting to coil packs? Standalone ECU to be able to create all 6 chamber signals as the engine will only give out 1 pulse from the cam position and 1 pulse from the crank (when you remove the dizzy).

Just weighing up my options and seeing what's best Research is key. A guy on Clubna-t removed the dizzy and run with coils using the dizzy sensor. There are various ways to do this, look for various distributorless threads. Wastespark coils can be used for AEM units that can't produce as many as 6 outputs, TT coils or other engine coils have been used. DaveH (king of NA-T's) in the US used truck coils for his 900hp+ builds.

The neatest solution would be to fit a 36-1 trigger wheel to the crank pulley and a Ford reluctor (£12 - £15). Trouble with having your rpm ref and your phase trigger on the cam is timing inaccuracies due to belt whip.

Then buy some quality coils like Bosch T coils (from the OZ ford Falcon) and set the timing on the coils using a 3D dwell map so you can run wasted spark without heating them at the top end (not that you could heat up a T-Coil). However, You can machine and weld the worm drive gear on the exhaust cam to give you one Phase tooth and just use another FORD reluctor to pick up off it.

It just so happens I have a full set of 6 Bosch T Coils so you will get to see what they perform like.
