downimpact
Unfortunately my place of work has moved from a 44 mile commute to a 92 mile commute. So I need to get rid of a car and buy something more economical I'm doing all motorway miles and want something reliable that returns reasonable mpg, unleaded, under £3k and quirky/reasonably nippy. So far I've considered a crx though they are a bit old and hard to find a reasonable example for what I would be willing to pay (they are not worth SZ money). tooquicktostop
Golf TDI, so well built and good MPG
j_jza80
VW Lupo 1.4tdi. 3 cylinder engine provides an entertaining soundtrack, can be mapped to 100hp and costs £35 a year to tax! It'll do 80mpg on a run! Or there's the Polo with the same engine if you need something Larger.
downimpact
thanks, trying to avoid diesels as running 2 petrol cars and 1 diesel, it will result in me putting the wrong fuel in the tank
johnny g
Focus 1.8TDCi - mate of mine has one with 200,000 on the clock, only costs him servicing and tyres. Get's nearly 70mpg on a decent run too. Or Yaris 1.33 - My missus has the auto and she gets 45mpg, and it's relatively nippy. Very comfy though.

Abz
What is most of the journey, motorway? I'd highly recommend getting a diesel, most have this thing where you can not put the wrong fuel into the car as the neck of the tank doesn't let you. Also most cars have massive Diesel stickers into the filler cap & on the dash too. Then you could write it on the back of your hand too The Audi A3 1.9 TDi is very good, lovely car to drive and very good MPG.
Swampy442
Put a sticker on the fuel flap saying diesel?? It's the only real choice for mpgz on long trips. I had a Skoda Octavia tdi, great car and regular 60+ mpg
TubbyTwo
Passat TDI with the PD engine, decent power, excellent MPG.

Always the benefit of being able to fill it with veg oil too.....

Supra Gaz
I'm with the diesel crew on this, for a long haul journey on a regular basis diesel is the only choice. I like the golf tdi, or gt-tdi if you can get one for the money, really well built, cheap parts and quite nice to drive. You would save a fortune using diesel over petrol with that journey. DodgyRog
I got a Pug 406 Estate for £1200 with long tax and MOT and only 120k miles, at the end of last year It's the 2.2 Turbo Diesel Executive, so it has all the bells and whistles, Cruise control, decent Stereo as stock etc and it returns around the 50mpg and I don't drive it carefully Saving me a fortune in running costs and after a year it will of paid for it's self easily, best thing I did was buy a Diesel Turbo and the bonus is I don't have to worry where I park it and there is loads of room for picking up Supra bits, as well as my fishing gear

downimpact
Cheers for the recommendations looks like I'll need to re think the diesel then, that lupo sport needs checking out as well.
TubbyTwo
Bora TDi gets my vote. http://pistonheads.com/sales/3697326.htm the PD engines are seriously rapid when remaped while still returning stupidly high mpg.
ubersonic
I bought an LPG converted LS400 as a winter run around last year, Lexus comfort/toys, Toyota reliability/quality, 260bhp 4L V8, and over 300 miles to £40 (that would be cost equivalent to nearly 48mpg petrol or nearly 50mpg diesel)
pbryant_knight
Honda Prelude 1997 - 2001. I've had 4 of these cars and they offer a fairly decent performance and the MPG isn't too bad. Only reason i got rid of my last one is i wanted a Supra or i'd still have it. Peter
