daily drive recommendations

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately my place of work has moved from a 44 mile commute to a 92 mile commute. So I need to get rid of a car and buy something more economical :( I'm doing all motorway miles and want something reliable that returns reasonable mpg, unleaded, under £3k and quirky/reasonably nippy.

So far I've considered a crx though they are a bit old and hard to find a reasonable example for what I would be willing to pay (they are not worth SZ money).

What is most of the journey, motorway? I'd highly recommend getting a diesel, most have this thing where you can not put the wrong fuel into the car as the neck of the tank doesn't let you. Also most cars have massive Diesel stickers into the filler cap & on the dash too. Then you could write it on the back of your hand too :D

The Audi A3 1.9 TDi is very good, lovely car to drive and very good MPG.

I've got a Passat TDI (110), averages 50mpg on my daily commute including back roads, on a run it get's nearer 60. Always the benefit of being able to fill it with veg oil too.....

Had one of these, was a hardy old car, its still going strong on its way to 200k with my friend.

Cheap as chips and very comfy to waft about in.

I'm with the diesel crew on this, for a long haul journey on a regular basis diesel is the only choice. I like the golf tdi, or gt-tdi if you can get one for the money, really well built, cheap parts and quite nice to drive. You would save a fortune using diesel over petrol with that journey.

I got a Pug 406 Estate for £1200 with long tax and MOT and only 120k miles, at the end of last year

It's the 2.2 Turbo Diesel Executive, so it has all the bells and whistles, Cruise control, decent Stereo as stock etc and it returns around the 50mpg and I don't drive it carefully

Saving me a fortune in running costs and after a year it will of paid for it's self easily, best thing I did was buy a Diesel Turbo

and the bonus is I don't have to worry where I park it and there is loads of room for picking up Supra bits, as well as my fishing gear
