J-Meiser
Hi I have read that it is possible to replace the distributor/HT lead setup on the 1UZ for a coil-on-plug setup. I have browsed numerous forums but I cannot seem to find a definitive answer or straightforward guidance (and I don't really want to sign up to even more forums - I've lost track of how many I have signed up to over the years), so I figured I would ask those who have done it on here . My questions are - how difficult is it to make this conversion work? Which coil packs would you recommend? Do you have to use an aftermarket ECU or can you make it work with the standard one? Thanks in advance!
Nodalmighty
You need the 1UZ coil on plug coils (2uz and 3uz VVTi ones should/might also work). It's the bore size of the plug holes you have to make sure is correct which is why I couldn't recommend 1ZZ-FE coils, however, 2ZZ-GE coils might work as they are thinner. These are all internally amplified so no igniter required. You will need a ecu with at least 4 ignition drives like a Syvecs, MoTec, Emerald K6 or Link G4 to make it work (or some very clever multiplexor that uses the engine position sensors to redistribute the ignition signal from the OEM ecu to the correct coil). Noz
You need an ECU that can give 8 outputs instead of 2. I wouldn't of thought your ECU can do that, otherwise you would have CoP in the first place. The 2ZJGE is the same. If you have a cam sensor and crank sensor you can send these signals to the aftermarket ECU which can control the other seperate coils. You need a Map ECU to convert the system. J-Meiser
I'm a werther's originals man myself. Lyndon. Skittles for me You need an ECU that can give 8 outputs instead of 2. Thanks Nodalmighty and Noz - it looks like I'll leave that idea on the back burner for the time being. I want to get the engine tidied and rebuild and I figured it might me something I could do whilst I had the engine on the stand, but, as I feared, it is going to require more knowledge and funding than I currently posses

David P
I want a V8...... You can pick up a V8 Aristo for around £250.
Nodalmighty
I'm in two minds as to V8 or NA-T. V8 would be cheaper, but NA-T easier. V8 sounds nice, but then so does a 2JZ on full song. As I was involved in probably the first 1UZ-FE V8 Supra conversion in the UK when I was at Thor I should give the NA-T a go as that's something I've not done before. Lyndon. Nodalmighty
You can pick up a V8 Aristo for around £250. Surely you want the SC400 as the sump and engine mounts are in the right place to start with? I'm sure there is a 4x4 GS430 V8 which might give someone idea's Lyndon. I'm sure there is a 4x4 GS V8 which might give someone ideas. You're not likely to find many Lexus SC400s in the UK... on the other hand, there are plenty of V8 Toyota Soarers. The V8 Aristo is 4WD (and if you see one for £250 let me know).
David P
Maybe I'm getting the Soaristo mixed up, but there are plenty of low mileage Toyota V8's that get weighed in, I'm surprised there are not more of these engines finding their way into Supra's? ruishy1
90919 02244 coils modified to fit ( buffing down the outsides to fit down the bore) and using some ecu that has 8 ignition outputs, dont go for 4 outputs and do wasted spark, the extra heat will fook the coils quick ! listy
Just wondering if anyone on the forum has gone v8 supercharged?? Now that would be COOL!!!!!!!!
Supra Gaz
Just wondering if anyone on the forum has gone v8 supercharged?? Now that would be COOL!!!!!!!! Now that's an idea! I love the idea of the v8, Thor do a w58 adapter kit, its not cheap mind.
David P
Jagman had a V8 Soaristo with an Eaton M90 on it that was sold it to A.N.Other member on here.

Colin-mkiv
Does the LS400 V8 fit in easily?
garethr
The Supra was based on the Soarer chassis, and the front crossmember is identical (as in the same part number), so the V8 from a Soarer drops straight in. The LS V8 has the wrong sump.
Guest ugp
You ideally need an ECU with fully sequential spark and injection, as said above the extra heat from running it wasted spark will cook the coils, I've learn't that the hard way. Get yourself a Megasquirt MS3X, I'm currently supplying and fitting them if you need any help or advice, it's the only reasonably priced ecu that can do the job properly. Ben I'd forgotten all about Megasquirt, I may have to look into this - after I sort out some newly-discovered problems. My Soarer will no longer start and is stuck in 'Park' . So until I get these sorted, my conversion plans are on hold!

J-Meiser
Drop me a pm with your number if you're still having trouble with it. Thanks and will do. I'm aiming to have another look at it next weekend, as this weekend's weather shot down my plans. I'll let you know what I try out and how I get on
garethr
... My Soarer will no longer start and is stuck in 'Park'...Can you move it from P if you press the red button? If you can, will it start in Neutral?
