tbourner
Bought a Renault 5 Campus 1988 on Sunday. £250. Monday the speedo stopped working - I'm assuming the spinner thing fell out the back from the ticky noise it made before it popped. Good thing is the odo isn't clocking up any more! Today the clutch cable broke, it had a new clutch in May, and I'm being blamed now for breaking the new clutch!! Can't see me wearing out a cable in 2 days!!! Are these easy fixes? Even for me? How much of a PITA is the clutch cable to replace? Any special tools needed?
Clarkey
You didn't buy it off a pikey did you ? :
tbourner
No it was an old bloke. Still £250 what do you expect!!! It's so simple under the bonnet (especially compared to the Supe), it should all be easy to fix when it all breaks!!

Graham S
clutch cables are easy, but make sure when you put it through the bulk head it goes through straight, or it will snap after no time like what has happened. and the speedo will be the cable broken probably, easy check is pull the pin out the box and pull the cable out, careful, dont let the drive drop into the box.... then the 'little bit of metal' that sticks out the end of the cable spin it whilst someone watches your speedo, if it goes up its fine, if not change it dude.... terribleturner
I bought a gts for £60 off a mate once. As Graham says the clutch cable is pretty easy. Think i have a Haynes manual round here somewhere. I could scan any pages you need and email them over.
psymon
My misses 5GTT ate a clutch cable every six months or so, this is a slight design fault by Renault. Easy install, takes bout an hour from start to finish. Fit it throught the bulkhead, attach to peddle and route to clutch lever. Lever the clutch lever with a jack handle and jobs done
tbourner
It's the auto adjusting black one as well not the newer white one - whatever all that means!! Will I need to get underneath or is it possible through the bonnet? It's going to be tricky to jack it where it is and I don't fancy towing it!! Lever the clutch lever with a jack handle and jobs done Its partly a design fault but the big problem is the fitting, when it goes through the bulkhead it HAS to go through straight, and buy the cable from renault too! Honestly, make sure they go in straight, it can take a while but it will make all the difference, and will save you doing it in a few months time again!! tbourner
There's no other way it can go in but straight!!! The bloody brake cylinder makes sure of that!! Stupid thing. I now have very cut hands but it's done. I'll update this thread when it goes again! See you in a week or 2!
