Just been stopped by the traffic police i wasnt doing anything wrong they stopped me firstly to tell me it was a lovely car :D. After they had a good nosey around the car one of them asked me to pop the bonnet and he then told me my HID kit was illegal as of Jan 1st apparently all HID kits wont pass an MOT! Is this right? I know this has been covered before and my car passed an mot no problem last October. He then said if the car isnt fitted with self leveling suspension or the headlight adjustment switch on the dash then it's not legal. They never fined me as he was actually quite good about it he just said for my information that i could get fined with them in future. Anyones MOT due soon thats got HID's?

Cheers.

Thats awesome dude. He prob used the HID to have a nosey at your motor.

Ive seen various people adding washer jets and other bits to make HID's legal. Mine popped and I have re-newed the warrenty as I can't be asked with the hassle.

I think as with the cat/decat situation, a friendly MOT place may assist.

I'll probably revert back to normal bulbs if it becomes impossible to get HIDs through without installing some Wallace & Gromit self levelling contraption.

I thought HIDs were fine and legal if they are used on projector lenses like ours and my zed. They are illegal if used on say a corsa with an open beam arrangement.

Peter.

I think that's the issue, cars without the projector lens don't really have much beam pattern and are just a blur for oncoming drivers....

In fact I got blinded today from a idoit Polo driver with aftermarket HID's as the beam pattern was just everywhere , he might of well drove with his hi beam on

So there probably going to ban ALL Aftermarket HID's from that

I have spoke to a few MOT testers at work and that not aware of any such rule so if you have a good beam pattern I'm sure it will go through

i asked this very same question a couple of months ago. IIRC HID's are fine so long as the self levelling and headlight washers fitted as standard are in working condition. If the self levelling and headlight washers do not work, then it is a fail.

Now the good bit......If the car is NOT fitted with self levelling and headlight washers, then the HID's can NOT fail MOT, as what is not there can't work.

Make sense?

So.....if you have a UK Spec, with washers and self levelling, it HAS to be in working order for the HID's to be an MOT pass.

If you have an IMPORT, which hasn't got self levelling or washers, HID's are still fine

Hope this helps.

I'll try and find the previous thread for a clearer answer

I think I can clear this up now. I've just spoken to my local MOT garage, and I read the rules for myself. They state that if the car already has self-levelling and/or headlamp washers, then they must work (if you have HIDs). Ancient cars like ours that don't have self-levelling and/or headlamp washers (UK Supras with headlamp washers will have to make sure they work though) aren't included.

In summary, if you have a newer car with self-levelling and/or headlamp washers, then convert it to HIDs, the original factory fitted equipment must work, otherwise it's a failure.

I'll be making sure I take my car to this garage for the MOT anyway!

So, just to be clear......if we have HID's on a JSpec its NOT an MOT fail, as it doesnt have self levelling or headlamp washars as standard?

Correctamundo. I have a JSpec, and have also had my existing HIDs adjusted by the very same garage. The MOT tester I asked did the adjustment for me.

UK Supras with HIDs have to make sure their headlamp washers work, though. :)

This is exactly what my MOT tester told me when I enquired about them.

It seems a grey area to be honest as the law has different views and are in the thinking that they are illegal and will be handing out fines. I might get an mot done shortly so its passed after this new law came in Jan 1st. If its passed an mot by law its legal. As long as the headlights are at the proper level on the mot test there shouldnt be an issue.

It's hard not to get a fine though if they want to issue a ticket they will.
