The Road Warrior
Hey everyone, Mate at work brought this for £200 not so long ago (maybe 6 months) and has asked if I want to buy it. Any idea how much this is worth? It's the one designed to run on a pda via bluetooth (which I'll have to buy as well). Also can you load up the camera detecting database on this version? & is this s/w free? Sorry about all the qu's, I'll only consider buying it if tells you where the cameras are as well as sat nav. terribleturner
I bought the reciever and cradle for my PDA of ebay then got hold of a copy of the software for free (you can get v.5 by torrents). Worked out to be under £100. Have a search on ebay.

Given what a PITA it is to install if he's already registered it online I'd only be tempted to get it if he was flogging for £25 or so, then I'd use the licence to upgrade it to version 5.... or just download version 5 from any popular warez website for free. Also can you load up the camera detecting database on this version? & is this s/w free? Sorry about all the qu's, I'll only consider buying it if tells you where the cameras are as well as sat nav. Yes you can: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras-poiwarner.php You might need to purchase POI Warner though, something like it is included in version 5. Jake
Given what a PITA it is to installHuh? Seemed easy enough to me. OK it takes a long time to install large maps but it's not difficult. Just click the button and leave it to install
Jake
I meant to add that TomTom 5 isn't worth bothering with IMHO. TT3 is much easier to use, is more user-configurable and has a speedo display that is readable, rather than the 3mm high digits used it TT5. Just click the button and leave it to install You snipped the important bit from that sentence when you quoted me if he's already registered it online The install itself is simple but it seems you have to tie the legit version into the PDA by way of a number it generates on install, you then register this online and it gives you the code to unlock the software properly. If someone has already done this before selling on the old version it seems to be a struggle to get them to sort things out, I believe you are allowed to install it twice though so you might be lucky. Glad you said that Jake. i download 5 but have somehow only managed to install some belgum maps. may just not bother with the rest of the upgrade. But to get the camera database the site seems to indicate you have to have v.5 Anyone got it with 3??
Jake
to get the camera database the site seems to indicate you have to have v.5 Anyone got it with 3?? What site is that James? Reading http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php it seems that it works with all versions of TomTom. Or are we talking about different things? imi
is tomtom 5 an upgrade to tomtom 3 NAVIGATOR ??? are there any major improvements?
Jake
TomTom Navigator 5 is allegedly an upgrade to TomTom Navigator 3 but it seems to be much the same, with the same out of date maps, repackaged in a slightly different GUI. Annoyingly, the menus now present you with "Buy Traffic Updates", "Buy This", "Buy That" before any of the useful features. For example, you now have to find and go into Preferences before you can change to the Night Time colour mode, instead of it being on the first Options screen. As I've already mentioned, the handy MPH speed display is now almost useless.

Faye
I think it was version 3 that John K and I used (Whitelightening had V5) on our recent Europe trip. First time either Keith or I had used it and couldn't recommend it enough.

So sounds like tomtom 3 is worth going for, he wants £100 for the bluetooth sat receiver, s/w & 2210 cradle, worth it? Cost him £250. Sounds OK if it's a decent GPS receiver. I recommend the Emtec BT one. IIRC it cost me about £170 in Jan 2004. Basically you're paying £100 for a secondhand GPS Receiver, The software is available free if you don't mind pirated and the cradle's only any use if it's for the same model iPAQ you're going to buy. I made the mistake of getting a model of iPAQ that there is no custom cradle available for So I have to use those crappy universal ones. Seems like the word 'Universal' in the PPC world means "Doesn't fit anything properly"
Digger
There's a freebee downloadable Post Code search add-on for Tom Tom 3 ... as far as I can remember, there was no Post Code search in version 3 ... (as taken from pocketgps world : "FULL UK POSTCODE SEARCH!! Yes that right for the first time in TomTom Navigator 5 we have built in 7 digit postcode searching."). Here's the post-code add-on for Tom Tom 3: http://www.digitools.co.uk/ukpostcode.php#instr Daz
ivan
Is 3 still available as a software package on its own? We're off for a cruise round Germany next month so I'm thinking of getting one of those Mio 168's and can't decide if I should get one bundled with TomTom 5 or get hold of 3 from somewhere and buy the cheaper one... http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/viewprod.php?product_id=760&PHPSESSID=2b075cd7c7a52662a9098bc29f3109c1 Cheers, Ken
Digger
I have a Mio 168 ... great bit of kit for Sat Nav stuff. No extra wires for the GPS receiver as it's all built it. Just plug the power cable into the cigi lighter and you're away.
ivan
Cheers Digger - but can I get hold of TomTom 3 for it?

TT5 is a lot smoother the 3 and I find it a vast improvement, only prob being as mentioned here the stupid menu systems, I have been told that you can edit this through word pad but I've still to try it. A later UK release had 4 digit postcode search I believe? TT5 has full postcode searching.
