jonc
Hi all, I don't normally post for help but I am really stuck on this issue:blink:. As some will know I took my car off the road to do a few jobs: Oil pump and front main seal Engine mounts All the belts and timing belt tensioner New upper front suspension arms and drop links. Rather than lift the engine and gearbox I went underneath and removed the subframe which to be honest was not too bad and the whole of the above went really well (although the crank bolt was a tight little bugger:taped:) I took the car for a test drive today to check everything and I have an issue I was not expecting:( Which is where the help from anybody is welcome:blink: If I leave the traction control on it operates all the time (particularly when pulling away), I can hear a humming coming from the passenger side of the engine bay (when I'm in the car driving). If you get out the car and rev the engine in neutral then there is no humming so I presume the ABS actuator is humming. it is noticeable when feathering the throttle open and closed . Also the ABS cuts in before you pull up to a standstill but no indication of ABS activating by the dashboard light (which works!) I hear you all say switch off the traction control. So I drive off with the TC turned off at the switch and while the car drives better (what a difference the new mounts and suspension changes have made!) I can still hear the same humming coming from the passenger side when feathering the throttle and when you pull up to a standstill the ABS still activates:( I have run diagnostics via DLC1 and there are no error codes stored in the ABS or TC ECU's although I am not sure that I am doing the correct check for the TC ECU because my manual is up to 96 and my car is a 98 (is there a difference?). I know I am doing the correct check for the ABS because I have fixed an issue before using the same diagnostics. Does anybody clever have an ideas when it comes to VVTI traction control. I dont want to unplug the ECU because I want the car running correctly as Toyota designed:p Any help would be appreciated before I make some phone calls in the morning Sorry the car is a 98 VVTI TT Tiptronic Thanks all Edited April 16, 2012 by jonc (see edit history)
wile e coyote
Check you have not disturbed any of the sensors in the hubs. Also the wires going to them as you have been working in those areas
jonc
Check you have not disturbed any of the sensors in the hubs. Also the wires going to them as you have been working in those areas Yes mate that was my first thought as the front subframe had been off. Before removing the sub frame I removed the upper wishbones and shocks so I tied the sensors up on the shock upper mounting holes out of the way from any work. There are no error codes listed and when I swung across the sensors with a multimeter I got 1.5-1.6 KOhms on both sides. I also checked all the connection were good and tight. I admit I have not checked the actual voltage but surely the ECU would come up in fault?
johnny g
Can you check for a pulse with car jacked up? You should see some kind of pulse as the wheel rotates.

jonc
Got home from work a bit earlier so decide to put the car up on stands and have another dig around. I did a pulse test and the drivers side was weak. I checked the sensor and in my hurry to put it back together the other night the O seal i had put onto the sensor was way too thick so the sensor was not sitting fully down in the hub. Not sure why I fitted such a big o seal I will have to put it down to either being tired or just Alzheimers. I checked the passenger side and that o seal is the correct size and the sensor fits into the hub correctly. I dont quite understand why there was no error code on the ABS for the RHS front but hey it's fixed. Cheers for your help guys it was appreciated.
