Dash lights, speedo cluster, dry joints?

Hi,

having problems with certain lights not coming on, only half the dash lights up etc (engine light works but oil level and oil pressure dont light up at all, all warning lights on the left hand display seem to work, door open etc) and have been reading through loads of old "dash light" posts but cant find any specific posts on where to find the "dry joints".

Tried all the usual searches, if there is such a thread can someone give me the link?

Changed the fuses in the driver footwell with correct rating for:

CIG

GAUGE

PANEL

This is what im presented with:

Dimmer doesnt seem to do anything so assume thats shot, will find a replacement, only P and R light up on the auto display and half the dash lights on the console dont work (LED comes on when function is selected but nothing else) Clock works, ODO display turns off when turning the headlights on. Cig lighter works as does the light, ashtray light works.

Are any lights suppoed to show on the actual auto gearstick? In the dark does the base of the stick light up or is it just the lights on the revcounter to show what "gear" is selected?

When sorting out and cleaning my speedo cluster yesterday I noticed that some of the solder points on the back of the green circuit look rusty, would this cause problems with dash lights?

Any help would be great.

If you dont have any spare bulbs, I would suggest swapping around ones that you know to be working. At least you can establish if the issue is just bulbs. The Auto gear indicators have tiny T2 wedge bulbs fitted under that thin rectangular plug at the lower centre. It is fiddly to remove but the bulbs are easy to change and LEds are available in this size if you want brighter bulbs.

The "P" on mine was not lit, so I swapped it for an LED which looks nicer and should last longer.

The only issue with LEDs is having to turn them around if they do not work the first time and the law of sod dictates that they will always go in the wrong way.

There is a T10 bulb under the actual gear lever housing.

It is another fiddly job and again I would recommend a multi SMD led bulb to really light it up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Having redone the dry joints this afternoon I now have a working oil temp and oil level.

On first inspection it didnt look like the joints had gone, only under LED lighting and a lense could I see the tiny cracks. Redone all the Joints on the upper right display and all work. Going to tackle the speedo cluster tonight.

Im shocking at using solder, so If i can sort it, anyone can.
