Rough price for a headgasket change?

Just been informed (day before selling car) that my headgasket has possibly gone on my MKIV N/A, obviously I wouldn't let it be sold like this so I'll be getting it done. My local generic garage are quoting me about £700 to do this job which I'm thinking is a little steep to be honest. Does this seem right to anyone, or failing that does anybody know of a decent garage in the Beds area that won't bum me daft on price?Thanks in advance!

If you're handy with a set of tools (and have access to an engine crane), it's cheaper to replace the whole NA engine! Most people can't *give* them away on here

if your an NA as above the engines are cheap as chips be cheaper to an engine swap

i would do it for £200. because im nice, but in all seroiusness , qicker, cheaper, easyer to drop another engine in, very unusual for an na- do the hg. orrrrrrr if it suits my needs at the rite price i might buy the car from you in its poor state

Why do they think the headgasket has gone, what symptoms does the car have? Have they done a sniffer test?

If its seriously overheated then the head could be scrap so changing the head gasket

might not be the fix you need.

 

You'd need to have the head checked to see if its warped once its removed, if its

over 0.1mm or 0.004" warped its scrap
