Big Mark
We're having some walls plastered so I turn off the combi boiler (Vokera Maxin 24e), removed the programmer from the wall (one of the walls being plastered), drained down the rads and removed two rads on walls also to be plastered. I then turned the boiler on and switched it into hot water only mode but now when I turn on the hot tap i only get cold water. I can hear something in the boiler whirring (fan and/or pump) but that's it. I've tried the reset button but nothing. Radiators aren't going back on for a few days but it doesn't make sense to me that having the C/H drained down should stop the boiler from working as it has a Hot Water only setting. Any boiler engineers out there to tell me it's something simple such as the something sticking or needing to refit the rads or is it screwed? mark3
The boiler heats up the central heating water which in turn heats up the domestic heat exchanger, this is the part your domestic water flows through to be heated up so if the system is drained you will not get hot tap water. you need to turn off the rad valves then fill and vent the boiler/system to 1 bar, there should be a filling loop on it some where and a pressure gauge for this purpose. Big Mark
Thanks for that. I wasn't sure how combi boilers work. As the boiler has a Hot Water only setting I thought i'd be ok to run it without filling the centrail heating. Problem is that I had to remove the valves with the rads as I have no flex in the pipes and therefor lifted rads with valves all in one go. I'll have to keep popping to the gym for showers until the plasterer is finished and I've got a lick of paint on the walls. Thanks for the info, saves me calling out a boiler engineer. Havard
Get a couple of copper blanks for the pipes and re-fill the system. I am surprised that anything is working if there is no pressure in the system. If you have run the pump without water in you'll bugger it in no time. H. Big Mark
I'll have rads back on tomorrow night/Wednesday morning so will be OK until then. Not sure what the boiler is doing when i turn on the hot tap but something inside it is making a sound. Have turned it back off now until rads are back on.
