Giiioo
what is the real power limit on w58? is it good for 400whp bpu 2jz?
tkddav3
no..doubt it would last long
Mario
Round about 350whp.
Swampy442
Hp isn't the issue though, it's the torque.
hackin_n_bashin
More to do with the torque, I'm sure there are a few bpu cars running the w58, but they don't hang on for long!
j_jza80
I would hazard a guess at just over 400ft/lb for reliability.
ashbuster
while we are on the same kind of subject how much can the r154 handle?
Giiioo
i have mk3 r154 but need bits to swap. anyway how much power r154 holds? is it good for 550whp? i know trust washer is issue on them but on what hp they brake?
ashbuster
ive been told that its stronger than the w58 so im thinking of doing that but depends how much it costs because if its not much more i may aswell go 6 speed
David P
trust washer See it as you say it.

welshbuddy
ive seen r154 holding 800+bhp its a strong 5 speed!
Giiioo
if washer changed they hold 900+ but need info how strong box with stock washer
Swampy442
550 whp is over 600 real hp, but once again you missed the point, its the torque that kills boxes not power. Depending on what youre doing with it. If youre pulling skidz and clutch kicking it, drag starts etc it wont last long but treated with a but of sympathy 600hp should be OK. dr_jekyll
its torque that kills boxes. 350lbs of torque and lots of off the line drag launches will soon lunch a w58 ,im running around 500lbs ft on my mk3 r154 now ,lets see how long it lasts
Giiioo
Is your r154 stock?
dr_jekyll
yea. the 154 is a strong box, the thrust washer will only suffer if the box is abused. my car is a circuit car. belive it or not, circuit racing is not too hard on the boxes. all the shifts are at pace so ther is minimal straing or load put through the shafts, where as drag launches put mega loads on the components
ashbuster
whats the rough cost of parts for the 154 conversion from a autobox?
Swampy442
whats the rough cost of parts for the 154 conversion from a autobox? I sold a conversion less clutch and flywheel for 1100 quid last year. It was box from a Chaser so it had the cradle shifter extension.
Giiioo
I need bellhousing and flywheel,
Oddball87
I did NA to TT conversion for a friend and he used the w58 and is running BPU, the box is still fine as far as i no.
Giiioo
My car is same, 400 hp on flywheel and box is fine but i want change ecu and power will be about 475 on flywheel. I think it's not safe for w58
Graham1984
I would hazard a guess at just over 400ft/lb for reliability. Out of interest would sort of bhp would that equate too?
dr_jekyll
Out of interest would sort of bhp would that equate too? you couldnt really say mate. some engines can make huge bhp with much less torque where as some engines can make mountains of torque with a relitively low peak bhp. bhp is just what the engine peaks at , torque is the engines twisting power , thats what does the job
Noz
depends on the set up graham. from what ive seen, bigger turbo's produce more torque at the same bhp (rare you see bigger turbo's producing the same power as smaller turbos, all depends on the setup). you normally see more bhp with less torque with turbo applications. so somewhere between 400-450bhp for example. if it was a supercharger, it would probably have 300-450bhp due to the delivery, as super charging is more focused on torque. diesel engines are different due to the way the fuel explodes rather than ignites, you get engines with 220bhp with 400+ ft/lb.
