Insurance claim

Is it possible to find out what someone claimed for e.g car damage or personal injury. I had a low speed speed shunt on the motorway last year in June which the guys armour plated landrover was fine, he was also fine and very nice about it. My renewal has just come through at nearly twice what I was expecting, I have rang Admiral and they told me a claim was made but they didn't feel the need to inform me  They said it is still open but the claim has been paid ... I want to know exactly what he claimed for as he was fine and there was no damage what so ever to his car as the only contact made was with his tow bar.

This means I can't come to Dragonball, due to forum rules there is no swearing so insert you own expletives here.

Insurance companies are such rip off merchants.

As are those that claim for whiplash and other related injuries that they say occurred from minor incidents - and yet it doesn't stop many members on here advocating the same approach if a fellow member was involved.

We reap what we sow eh?

If he has claimed for car and personal injury, the case won't be closed until personal claim has been settled. So, the ins co may have payed out on the car 'damage' but not on any injury claims. Its rip off Britain, everyone wants a piece of everyone else these days.

They told me they won't close it until september as that is there cut off point for claiming for something else. I want to know what he is claiming for as if he is claiming for vehicle damage can I take him to court for insurance fraud? I am assuming if he has claimed for whiplash some mickey mouse doctor has wrote a report.

He managed to reverse down the hard shoulder for over half a mile looking over his shoulder no problem, he got out we talked and concluded there was no damage to his car but he wanted my insurance details for peace of mind. In hind sight I would have said no if I knew he was going to make a dodgey claim.

Was that aimed at me?? Because i have never advocated anything of the sort

No. It was in response to your comment that insurance companies are rip off merchants. I just wanted to point out that it is not helped by the other kind of rip off merchants - those who claim for imaginary injuries.

There have been several instances in the past whereby members have been advised to do that very thing - not by you I hasten to add - and so we end up reaping what we sow.

What a situation to be in Mike! Have you tried other insurance companies? As you will find it is normally cheap going with another company after a claim then to remain with them. It is a bit silly they hold out for this long which affects your premium so vastly.

I had exactly the same thing. Some joker who had a 20 year old 5 series slammed his brakes on in front of me. I stopped but our cars touched there was not damage to his car. His tax disc was 6 months out of date but he still claimed whiplash, 500 quid damage to his car complete cowboy but that is life It seems.. I even had an independant witness who was standing by the side of the road come over and tell me that he would vouch for me in court, he gave a statement to the insurance companies but these personal injury guys are so pushy that insurance companies seem to prefer just to settle with them.. My premium is not 500 quid more than it was last year.. and I have been insured for 17 years and this is my first claim.. makes you sick...

Just rang back and spoke to someone else and she has given me a completely different story !! She now says that their isn't a claim and they haven't even been able to get in touch with the third party  That they have to leave it open in case they claim. Ringing back tomorrow to speak to someone else.

If that's the case, you were driving too close. There's a good reason why the courts rule in favour of those who have been rear ended.

I am going to contact the financial ombudsman tomorrow to help me in sorting this out as what Admiral is doing doesn't seem right or legal. They are zeroing my no claims in case the third party claims, how can they do that ? Then she said they leave it six months before they close it but it's been nine months .... she said they have to review it

What insurance company is it out of interest? From what i have seen over the years, insurance companies are a law unto themselves, they seem to be able to get away with anything and make the rules up as they go along. Hope you get it sorted fella, from what i'm reading it sounds like your getting ripped off. The sad thing is, i doubt you'll be able to do anything about it :(

Admiral mate, but I think there won't be enough time for me to get it sorted and I don't want to leave it too late to sell my Dragonball tickets otherwise that over 200 quid down the pan.

I nearly caused an accident today. Some daft cow in a Renault Megane was right up my chuff on an A road. I couldn't see her headlights at time and had no chance of seeing the number plate. I left it very late before I indicated and slowed down to turn into our street. She jammed on and gave me a dirty look in the mirror. It's funny as I had been giving her the evils in the mirror for the mile she had been tailgating me.

That said, I somethimes get a bit close to the car in front but Audis are allowed to do that..!!

Surely until a claim has been made, you cannot be punished. Once a claim is made then I can understand them not giving you the discount. I would get some advice from the FSA. The way Admiral are going on, you could cock up another members insurance by finding out who he is insured with, find his reg no on a photo, ring his insurance and say that he bumped your car but you are not going to claim. That member would then be buggered at renewal time.

How vindictive would you have to be to carry that one out? Sounds like Admiral are pretty inept when it comes to claims.

We had a problem with an open insurance claim and I told the insurance company I would be taking them to court for lose of earnings as I couldn't afford to insure the car I needed for comuting

Then within the 3 day deadline I gave them, the case was suddenly was closed and sorted

It's amazing how quickly things happen when it's going to cost them money

People slam their brakes on all the time, that can't be used as an excuse. If you keep your distance and speed sensible, this won't happen.

If you can give me a reason why there may be an exception though, I'm all ears.

I do have an amount of sympathy, we all lose concentration etc occasionally. But making the victim out to be the bad guy is out of order IMO.
