C_Strike
hi, im a bit of a noob to mechanics but im going to be doing my stem valve seals with some help from a mechanic that specialises more in 3s-gte . Im trying to gather all worthwhile components to fit whilst im doing the valves and belts so i can do it all at once. what parts should i buy for this task, and what else would be worth doing whilst im doing the valve seals? Is it worthwhile buying a complete engine gasket kit or should i only buy the steam valve gaskets? I have been quoted £260 delivered for the full gasket set from TCB in devon. Is there anyone local to Chippenham/ Wilts that may be able to have a look at the car and tell me what to spend my money on? i dont mind swinging some dosh your way if u can help me out, there isnt really a garage/ mechanic here that i have much faith in unfortunately. Josh
Have a check of the guide on how to do it; http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?49859-How-To-Valve-Stem-Seal-Replacement That'll tell you everything you'll need (breather hoses, coil pack connectors) in case you missed some stuff and may need it

C_Strike
I couldnt tell you dude, im doing the manual work on command from a previously supra owning, mechanic (with a bad back, lol). I will take the head off if its the best choice, time isnt too much of an issue on this as im doing the labour. Should i buy the gasket kit @ £260? i assume its a head off method? Or should i just get the kit only for the stem valves? cheers
dude
Do they do a headset or is it a choice of headgasket or full gasket ???
D8MOA
valve stem seals from toyota have gone up quite a bit in price.... i think its only about £40 more for a complete gasket set which included front and rear main seals... cam seals.... camgaskets... etc
carlmhtt
If you are removing the head then buy the head gasket set. You'll use them all. It would be worth replacing the cambelt and aux belt if they have not been done for a while. Water pump is often worth considering if not replaced recently although I inspected mine and it still looked like new with no play in it at all. Also replace head bolts as they are stretch bolts assuming you remove the head. You can check them and if in tolerance reuse them but for me the idea of torqueing up an old bolt and having it shear is not worth the risk. If the head is coming off, then the cams are coming out so they may need reshimming on putting them back in. As mentioned there are a few breather pipes that perish and go hard so will want replacing on them cam covers. Main thing to remember, LABEL EVERYTHING YOU REMOVE!, particularly if it's going to be done over a period of time. There's a lot of pipes and wires and it's surprising how you forget. To be honest it's a daunting task but as long as you take your time, double check everything you should be fine. Carl
Dnk
If taking the head off i'd strip and rebuild the head, re grind valves and seats and maybe replace the guides depending on what their like.
