Colin-mkiv
I have an NA Auto and as most of you will know, the bottom of the radiator on these cars is the oil cooler for the transmission. I am looking to uprate the cooling on my car and fit electric fans, I don't trust the viscous fan at all and removing that and the air-con from an NA should improve throttle response a little bit. I am aware of the power steering bracket issues associated with the aircon removal, but what pitfalls am I likely to encounter in the fitting of an aluminium radiator intended for a TT and fitting a separate transmission oil cooler in where the standard IC would go on a TT? Cooling would be via 2 x 12" or (similar sized) fans fitted in a custom shroud on the rear of the rad and would be switched via a sensor plumbed into the top radiator hose. I would also be looking to fit a more accurate temp gauge in the cockpit. All suggestions and advice gratefully received. Cheers.
Scooter
our most experienced Supra mechanic will urge you to keep and trust the vicous fan. An NA auto has completely adequate cooling for both the coolant and ATF. So i'd fit the accurate temperature guage if you must tinker! Colin-mkiv
.....ohhh.....tinker I must! Can the viscous fans be overhauled?
Scooter
The viscous fans fail by stiffening ie their failure results in over cooling a kind of failsafe design. If you pop the bonnet and yours moves fine by hand it is ok, if it's stiff/won't move then the fan is seized and obviously not ok! A siezed fan will/should have made itself known before now by the noise and possibly poor idle. David P
I have an aftermarket alloy rad, oil stat, cooler, electric pump and electric fans in my N/A auto. Plenty more pics in my garage and albums.
