it has the iPod interface with lead so plugs to the ipod which has the same connector? have to check...

I only asked as I had an the same adapter kit on an older alpine head unit and could not get it to play any music from my phone

That's probably down to wear on the socket on the phone. I had exactly the same problem, it charged fine etc but wouldn't work with the lead. As soon as I tried an iPod it worked perfectly. When I got a newer iPhone it also worked.
