EGT probe Q's

Wheres the best place to mount the EGT probe on the stock manifold? Specifically where is there enough room/material?

 

I have the turbos off so access isn't a problem....... its just that the thing is small!! The probe on my Autometer gauge is about two inches long so going in at a rightangle is out of the question.

Is there enough meat to go in at an angle between say ports 1&2 to tap for the tapered boss ? 1/8 NPTF

 

Particularly like to hear from someone who's done one before

i had mine installed in wrong location to start with. it was put in top of cat close to turbo. had it re fitted in right place in manifold close to radiator. got some pics in a zip file if you need them.have got my intake pipes stripped out if you want me to take a close up pic tommorow.

Are you sure that you can't cut the length of the probe down or fix it fitted length? 2 inches is well long. The HKS one is only about 2cm or so. The probe on the SPA gauges is huge; about 6" long, and you just cut it to size.

 

Don't take my word for it, but check it out. Might save you a lot of agg.

Cutting the probe will knacker it, the thermocouple is right at the tip, the kind I suspect he has will fit in an olive, so the excess length can just be left external to the manifold, leaving just the measuring tip in the gas flow. I'll let Monkey Mark send a pic, it will speak a thousand words (hope I drilled the `ole straight if it's going on TV) :p

Hmm....thats why I said to make sure. The only reason I suggested he check it out was because I couldn't believe SPA (for example) would make a thermocouple that was so bloody long in the first place if you couldn't alter it's length. I take on board that it may use an olive so you can stick as much into the port as you want but it seems crazy to leave such a huge amount poking out from the engine. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen if you ask me, hence the suggestion that he at least check it out.

Most of the actual probes used are generic ones, often used in industry and they need to be long as they have to poke through a lot of industrial oven insulation and suchlike. I know the Autometer probes have the junction at the tip as a customer lopped the end off one to shorten it, and it didn't like it at all :eek:

At least the long ones allow the wiring to be kept well clear of anything red hot, but as you say, sometimes small is better.

Yeah, I know what you mean Chris. Not banging on about HKS again but it's things like this that make the difference. Their EGT probes are designed specifically for the job, with a nice short probe, and a spring coil covering the wire to prevent heat and crimp damage.

 

The SPA probes are horrible IMO. No doubt they work OK but I can't stand permanently-fitted stuff that just looks like it's been pulled from an industrial RS catalogue (like the Apexi solonoids). The wire connectors are big and bulky, the probes are far too long and the wiring setup is messy.

 

You pays yer money....

 

Sorry matt, drifting a bit there. If I remember I'll take a digipic of the next EGT installation we do.

Thanks Guys I've drilled and tapped the manifold now...( I rec'd a pic of Martins install)...... Just gotta find an olive to suit now (thanks Chris ... I really should have thought of that!)

 

I take your point on the HKS probe Nathan... are they available seperately? I'll check if they are compatible with my autometer gauge if they are.............
