Matt H
SOLVED - INSTALLED A HID RELAY I've had my HIDs for a while now and wondered if the passenger side bulb needs replacing or whether it's something more sinister, like the ballast? The passenger side usually lights up when I first turn the car over, but quite quickly turns off and won't come back on. Is this the way HID bulbs behave at the end of their life? (normal fillament bulbs just die and that's it), or could the problem be something else? Just thought I'd ask before ordering new bulbs only to find I need a new ballast or something. Thanks, Matt Edited May 29, 2012 by Matt H (see edit history)
Iky
Can you not take the bulb out and try it on the driver side?
Nic
Probably a bad earth/poor connection somewhere, the ballasts need a certain voltage to fire up the HID bulbs, a low voltage can cause flickering or the bulb not to light at all. Try swapping the bulbs over and see if the problem stays on the same side. You could try connecting the ballasts up directly to the battery and see if they work okay. Connecting the ballasts up with a relay directly to the battery will ensure they work properly, do a search on Ebay for 'HID relay'.

Never had one go on me, but I'd imagine they would be like the filament bulbs and just not work.
Matt H
Thanks for the advice. Sounds like from what Nic is saying the bulb could be ok. I'll give those tests a go. Much appreciated.

Nic
An HID Relay wired up to the battery should solve the issue.

Matt H
Bit of an update. I bought a HID relay (took a while to get here as it came from Hong Kong). Installing it was really easy and it seems to have solved the problem. Cheers for the advice, Nic
shaz2010
Just bringing this back up, I bought my HIDS on the group buy back in 2012 a think it was. Now my HIDS are playing up,they have been like this for a while now basically one side will turn off while am driving, I then turn them off and back on and they stay on! Then sometimes they don't go off. Its really random it can be either side and sometimes both. any help appreciated. Cheers This was the group buy by dan http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?277323-Group-Buy-on-HIDs&highlight=Hids+problem
