Lude
i put my car in my garage for the winter, now that the summer is on the scene, so is time for the Supra before i put it in the garage, i changed the rear pads (brand new) as they were getting low . all was fine when i tested them, no noises etc. ive got the car out, ive only driven 1 or 2 miles, each time i press the brakes the rears sound asif there is no pad left, thats the noise. (yes the pads were fitted the correct way not backwards ) how long will it take for the brakes to quiet themselves down? and why do they make a noise after not being used? are UK spec brakes
Havard
Were the brakes wet when you put the car away? H.
Lude
no i dont beleive so, i changed them on a dry day a few months ago. im pritty sure they were ok when i put them on, it was months ago & i only drove it round the block. i have noticed this happens on other cars ive had, when left for a few weeks the brakes initially scrape/sound for a few miles, wondering why this happens, and will it sort itself out on the supra, or do i have to strip, clean & re-fit the pads or do something to the discs? Havard
Has it been stored dry or open to the elements. I was surprised that my brakes were stuck on slightly yesterday as I moved away with a clunk. 5 miles down the road, they were fine. I could just be a slight rust build up from the moist weather. H. Swampy442
Normal. The discs are iron and a layer of corrosion can build up if theyre left. They will clean up fine after a few miles.
Lude
ok thanks guys swampy i did see they had areas of brown rusty-ness in some areas of the discs, yea its been storded in a "dry" garage, by the inverted commers, i mean a garage that does leak in some areas so there would be moisture in the garage. will take it easy until they clear up

Ian C
Lightly left foot brake for a few seconds as you drive away, cleans them up nicely

Abz
Lightly left foot brake for a few seconds as you drive away, cleans them up nicely As Ian says this will take them off, nice 20 mile trip of some stops and starts should sort it out
Lude
bumping this thread, i drove the car for the first time properly today, ive drove the car 10-15 miles. the car is still doing the noise. ive taken a pic of the both rear discs, they are both the same and have a mark going through them? how is this? will it clear up or do i need new discs?? Nic
Did you leave the handbrake on whilst it was in storage?
Lude
i did for a few about 2-3 months, then realized i had left it on, so about 2 months it was off. what are the marks? car sounds awfull when brake, it sounds like the pads are down to the metal but they are brand new? (and they only go on the one way so cant be wrong?)
Swampy442
It's caused by uneven pad wear, there's an area of the pad that's not touching the disc.
tomgeer
I'd guess its due to a seized/sticky caliper.
Colin-mkiv
I'd take the calipers off, free up and copperslip the pistons and fit new pads. This should ensure even pad wear and will clean your discs up under normal driving within a week or so. You could go the full monty and fit new discs as well. You would have extra peace of mind etc, but expect the slight corrosion next time the car is sstored for a lobg period of time. The only way to avoid this is to have a dry garage with the air circulating around it.
Lude
thanks fot help, the pads are brand new though, were just put on a few months ago. so remove them, copper grease the back and sides of the pads yea? how to i copper grease the pistons? you dont have to splitthe caliper do you? is the marks on disc what causing the noise? Dnk
I wouldn't put copper grease on the pistons, you need to use a lithium soap glycol based grease. Edited April 2, 2012 by Dnk (see edit history)
Lude
ok thanks. so the noise we think is caused by a sticking caliper? on both sides?
SteveR
Easy way to check - find an empty road of large space you can drive around for a few minutes at say ~30mph ish (no need to go mental) and then stop WITHOUT using the brakes, just coast. Handbrake on, get out of the car and put your hands close to each the disk and see if you can feel a ton of heat coming off any of them. It should be pretty obvious if one has a problem: if you've not used them at all they will be air temp cold. Be careful not to touch them just in case they are hot. Obviously try to use the brakes as little as possible between setting out and the above test / testing for the heat. There could also be something stuck between the pad and disk, try a few very sharp, heavy applications of the brake - you don't need to be going fast (20mph will do!) but of course you should choose somewhere somewhere in a straight line and away from following traffic, and not on the same journey as the above test. Lude
ok i get you. wierd the both discs have the same marka on them and both grinding. makes me think ive done something wrong. what could i have done wrong though? the metal clips on the pads possibly wrong? just seems odd sticky caliper to cause the noise. think they need to be removed checked and cleaned... and un seized if they are Edited April 2, 2012 by Lude spelling (see edit history)
SteveR
Hmm dunno... Did you open the brake fluid reservoir when you pushed the pistons back? Is the brake fluid level within the max & min? I doubt that's it but worth asking anyway. Try pumping the brake pedal a few times (engine running but car stationary) to try and unstick them - don't get your hopes up it's really unlikely to help but 1/100 chance it will and it's saved you taking the wheels and brakes off. Lude
yes mate removed the resivour when pushed caliper back and thers plenty fluid there.
Lude
right just been out for a quick sloww run. discs are cold. i can hear them lightly scraping though even when driving with brakes off? ive left my wheel brace and jack up my garage, so cant look properly. however there seems to be some play in the pads about 1mm, asif they are loose in the caliper? rider
I'm with Tomgeer on this, it could well be a sticking piston. Does it grate more when you put the wheel on lock and go when you brake? If thats your symptons then I'd go for a sticking piston in your caliper.
