GTR Fever
hey guys, drove my car and noticed a slight misfire. knowing that the car is garaged alot, i figured the plugs needed cleaning. took out the one from no.6 cylinder and its completey coated in oil...top to bottom..even the coilpack has some oil on it..didnt take out any other spark plugs tho, just that one.. what can cause this? are my piston rings gone? thank you in advance PROBLEM FIXED....THANKS GUYS!! Swampy442
Piston rings won't affect the coil pack. More than likely it's your cam cover gaskets leaking oil into the plug wells.
Wez
Have you or someone else topped it up recently?
Dnk
If its on the outside of the plug and the coilpack it will more than likely be the cam cover seals
ashbuster
exactly the same here, changed the plugs yesterday and 2 of the 6 plugs were covered in oil over the coilpacks too but im almost sure on mine its the cam cover as said above? ive nipped them all up now i forgot to do a couple last time

Dnk
Old cam cover seals go hard over time/milage and should be replaced along with the washers on the bolts as they have seals on each one Edited March 25, 2012 by Dnk (see edit history)
ashbuster
ill have to replace mine then dunk i guess they dont cost much anyway, and they probably never been changed
SupraD06
Im just about to start swapping my seals this morning, ive not checked the spark plugs yet, but ive got oil all down the side of my cam covers so theres a good chance ill find it in the spark plug wells. I ordered both seals from Paul Whiffin on here, think they are about £10 each. But ive also replaced all 16 washers that hold down the cam covers aswell, as these have rubber bases on them that make a tight seal, and they can also perish over time. Get some brake cleaner from Halfords to clean up any oil spills
