Coughing and spluttering in traffic jam

listy

Recommended Posts

Straight after the MOT today, (passed with flying colours :D) hit the M4 where there was a massive traffic jam. After a while, the supra started to cough and splutter when i pressed the accelarator. She did this the whole time i was stuck in the jam, but once i got clear of it, the problem seemed to clear up.

It was seeming to happen when the first turbo started to spool, so obviously once i was up to speed on the motorway, the first turbo was pretty much constantly spooled, so not sure if the problem sorted itself.

A while back i had a turbo vacuum pipe come loose, and this felt a bit like that, but ive check the vacuum pipes and cant see anything wrong.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Jon

nobody have any ideas? Im going to take all the vacuum pipes off tomorrow and check for splits/bad fitment.

Anyone have any other possible suggestions incase that doesnt solve the problem?

Really want to get this sorted asap. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated

A j-spec running a MAP sensor is pretty immune to vac leaks, all you'd really do is lose boost but it'd still measure the actual air coming in. Unless it's the hose going to the MAP sensor itself. Check that first, and watch out, if you've got a leak there and go on boost it can cause you to go lean and lunch the engine, it happened to Jake once.

Overfuelling could be the issue, did it try to stall at very slight throttle openings? And also when you closed the throttle did the revs drop too low and it struggled for a moment to stay idling?

Sounds like this. I checked all the vac pipes today anyway, nothing wrong there. FMIC is all good too.

I had a feeling it may have been over fuelling as im still getting used to the stage 4 paddle clutch ive had put in, which isnt great for low rev starts anyway. It seems to have sorted itself out for now anyway. Going to take all the sparks out and give them a clean tomorrow just to make sure she isnt missing a beat, needs doing anyway really.

MAP sensor? Where is this and the hose i should be checking? Really dont have a clue. Suppose it would be best just to make sure :)

Checked, alls good. I think she was just over fuelling a bit in the traffic jam. Been for a drive today and all seems fine. Checked the sparks today too and gave them a clean. 6 new ngk iridiums on to do list. They aren't too bad but i think could benifit from new ones soon.
