neo2810
I changed my discs for brand new OEM today and 1 min into a test they started screeching loudly (so embarrassing)!! I didn't grease anything putting them on, just straight swap, should I have?
Geo
was it just disks? or pads also?
neo2810
Just discs. Rear pads changed 2 weeks ago so they are new. Fronts half worn.
Geo
I'd take them off again bud, and make sure there on right? Double check everything. Do you only get the screech when the brake pedal is pressed?
tony tt
I would have put new pads in aswell mate those old pads could be the cause of the squeek on the new discs.
neo2810
Screech is constant, but only when going forwards, reverse is quiet. I've attached a pic of the disc. Looks like the pads are squeezing into it too tight?
neo2810
The screech is loud, bloody loud, like something is really grabbing the metal.
p3te
does the pistons not want pushing back in the caliper? if the disc was worn the extra thickness of the new disc it will be making it rub
neo2810
Pushed the pistons back. I had to in order to get the discs on.
Guest George89
sometimes when installing new discs and pads. a small stone chip can get in the way of the pad which causes your disc to wear on one point. In your case 2 points up disc and lower disc. take the pads off and put them back on again.
Josh
Check the metal cover/shield behind the disk hasn't been bent to touch the disc too. If it's just when you brake though, I'd doubt it's that.

neo2810
I'll pull the wheel off in the morning and reseat everything. See if that sorts the issue. Cheers chaps
Swampy442
Before that, work out which wheel is screeching, and check the shields before you go to the hassle of pulling the brakes apart
Chris Wilson
The pads haven't even started to bed properly. From the looks of things in the photo the old pads are anything but flat. they make take 1000 miles of normal driving to bed fully. You should have fitted new pads..... They will bed, eventually.... Benjy
I would always fit new pads with new discs. Also, i'd grease the edges of the pad where they sit in the carrier with copper slip or Pagid brake pad grease. Also, make sure the pads aren't handed. I know on the mondeo's, one end of the pad is shaped to reduce squeal, but if you fit them upside down they'll be reaaallllly noisy.
dude
I normally put a chamfer on the leading edge of the pad.
Benjy
I normally put a chamfer on the leading edge of the pad. That's what I was getting at in my dumbarse round the houses kinda way
Ian C
Are you sure you put the pads back in the right way around? A freind of mine once put the friction material against the piston and the metal backing plate against the disk in his VX220
Chris Wilson
He'll find out soon enough..... Pedestrians beware....
jay200bhp
cant beleive no one else said this ,chris is right the pad surface is bowed if you like and touching where the ware marks are on the new disc face theyll take an age to bed in replace the pads to save ruining the new discs! The pads haven't even started to bed properly. From the looks of things in the photo the old pads are anything but flat. they make take 1000 miles of normal driving to bed fully. You should have fitted new pads..... They will bed, eventually.... neo2810
Thanks chaps. In the end, it was just my clutzyness that bent the dustguard back in itself when I put the caliper back on so it was scrunching on the back I the disc. Sorted now and the front pads have started to wear even already so all is well. Appreciate what youre saying Chris, and normally I'd replace the pads too but the car goes to Germany next week and having spent £500 to get it fit for the new owner already........ The existing pads are fine and will settle in very quickly.

neo2810
Let's hope the new owner doesn't read this thread He probably will, but he's aware of every last detail on the car as I've been totally open about everything so I've no problem with that
