mobius
noticed tonight that when cool my top rad hose was collapsed undid rad cap became normal again with a gurgle in the rad. Any ideas would it be worth changeing them, got 2 new ones in garage anyway, and why would it do this. expansion tank at right level
safcdixon
Your rad cap could well be knackered so it's not releasing pressure when it should, worth changing as they are only about a tenner.
Chris Wilson
Return valve in rad cap, or pipe to water overflow container for rad is knackered. Fix it NOW!
mobius
Cheers guys thought that had a look is it better to get an upgrade one higher pressure and what about ones on ebay, ??
Chris Wilson
Just get a stock one from your local Toyota dealer. You are probably a cock's stride from a heater matrix failure as it is, without upping potential coolant pressure.
mellonman
You are probably a cock's stride from a heater matrix failure as it is, miles away then if it was me
mobius
You are probably a cock's stride from a heater matrix failure as it is, when you say this do the 2 go hand in hand then? not losing fluid carpet dry but do get a smell from the vents now and then, so already saving up for possible matrix failure
Chris Wilson
I mean that if you fit a higher blow off pressure cap and the car gets hotter than it should, the pressure will rise higher in the system than with a stock cap, which in turn means a weak matrix / hose / rad, *whatever* is more likely to fail catastrophically. You don't NEED a higher pressure cap, so why look for trouble?
mobius
Was thinking that myself Chris will phone local Toyota dealer Monday get it Tuesday will not be doing much mileage over next few days 4 miles to work either way

mobius
Update got rad cap but noticed when fitting it old one 1.1bar but Mr t gave me one with 0.9bar on it looking online found that UK SPEC .9 and Imporr 1.1 . Will it make any difference? Also think old cap ok as noticed that expansion tank exit on rad blocked so now all clear probably what the fault was lucky I think that pressre did not blow anything Edited March 22, 2012 by mobius (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
.9 bar is fine, probably safer on cars with original heater matrices.
mobius
Cheers Chris thought that would be OK same thinking keep pressure as low as possible think I was lucky not to blow anything and think a rad flush may be in order with the crud in exit hole in rad and expansion tank pipe, perhaps a lesson to all of us don't forget the the little things that you can over look
