What's the deal with HID's these days, wasn't there talk of aftermarket HIDS being an MOT fail soon?

 

I think I can clear this up now. I've just spoken to my local MOT garage, and I read the rules for myself. They state that if the car already has self-levelling and/or headlamp washers, then they must work (if you have HIDs). Ancient cars like ours that don't have self-levelling and/or headlamp washers (UK Supras with headlamp washers will have to make sure they work though) aren't included.

 

In summary, if you have a newer car with self-levelling and/or headlamp washers, then convert it to HIDs, the original factory fitted equipment must work, otherwise it's a failure.

 

I'll be making sure I take my car to this garage for the MOT anyway! ;)

Officially it's not, but I've heard from at least 2 sources that say their MOT testing friends would fail them, as they've read the regulation changes wrongly. It states in a Matters of Testing magazine that it should fail if the car doesn't have ALL the same things as a car with HIDs as standard, but this is an opinion of the editors, not official word from VOSA. MOT stations should actually be looking to the MOT Inspection Manual for Reasons for Rejection, where it clearly states 'if fitted' or words to that effect.

Correctamundo. I have a JSpec, and have also had my existing HIDs adjusted by the very same garage. The MOT tester I asked did the adjustment for me.

 

UK Supras with HIDs have to make sure their headlamp washers work, though. :)

Andrew, do you run with high beams as well, or just stick to the HID main beam? For some reason on mine, the previous owner wired the high beams up to the HID (incorrect if i'm right) and they dont work. iirc the high beams should just be as standard still? And by not having high beams, is it an MOT fail? MOT coming up in the next couple of weeks!

HID's for main beams (like I have) are fine for mot except you need more specialist hids with preheat so when they first turn on they instantly achieve full intensity, some production cars have hid main beams and often run a higher voltage spike during startup

That's confusing. Sidelight - Dipped beam - Main beam.

So dipped beam HIDs, I think when you flash the main beam the dipped beam has to stay on? That's a rule for the MOT I think, or is it that sidelights have to stay on when dipped beams are on? Not sure what the Supra does in that respect.

For Main beam as Pulley said you need special HIDs, normal ones take about 4-5 seconds to heat up are no good for main beams.

Yeah, I understand that, but I was hoping for a link to some on sale somewhere. ;)

 

Did you try calling the number I put ????? There are 2 diff ballasts and the cheap kits have the wrong one, also dont go for 50W kits as they are prone to catch fire.

That's a good price find I will get a HB3 9005 for my NA with some 6000k.... Is that everything needed for this or is there anything I should get as well as the above????

Yes, that is all you need. The HID kit, which is on that Ebay advert, and of course, a TT. ;)

I haven't called that number yet, and it looks like a company called N Cook Security. Is that right?

What is the colour like on your 4300k??? I was always going to go with 5000 but am somewhat wondering if 6000 will be too blue..... Choices choices.
