Merc A Class anygood?

According to people I have talked to about these cars, (we looked at one) they are not very well made, being the bottom of the range car - even the elegance model.

Engines are the best thing about them, I would recommend looking at the Audi A2 1.4TDi - very quick and extremely frugal 70+ mpg.

I know its sad but we have a Lupo 16V sport they are really reliable and nippy, good on petrol and very well built. Only consider a lupo if your mum and dad are short, I am 6ft 1" and find it a little small for my liking. My girlfriend loves it.

My missus car is an A-class and my mates missus has an A2. Looks wise and economy, the A2 will win hands down. We have never had a prob with build quality and to be honest is the best new car we have ever had.

We used to lease cars and that gave us an idea about which cars were good or not. My mate had his A2 before we had ours and told me not to get an A2 he struggles for space all the time and legroom is a problem in the back. Not so with the A-class.

Servicing is a bit pricey, but what do you expect from Merc.

As long as the A-class has the ASC it wont tip over, and tbh even the tip over early ones to stop them doing it you just had to fit different tyres to it as the standard ones were too grippy.

We are thet happy with ours, the missus want us to upgrade it to the new one.

One point about the A-class engines though. There is little difference in emmissions between the 1.4 and 1.6, so I think the tax is roughly the same. The 1.6 has roughly the same economy as the 1.4 unless you are driving round town all the time. Dont touch the diesel. that is the one we tested. The missus hated it and I thought it was too noisey. Almost put us off having one. Until we took the petrol out for a test.

Cheers for that input.

Mum also like the Yaris - and with it being a Toyota I'm trying to persuade her that way. She can get a nearly new one for the same price as the A class she's seen. (as you'd expect). Servicing costs are a good point I hadn't considered too.

i just bought my brother an a-class down the car auctions last week its a 1999 avangarde model semi auto and i payed £3400... ive only given it a little test drive but it seems a very good car, nippy as well but the gears feel wierd as there is no clutch

overall tho it was worth the money he payed for it...

the newer ones you are looking at are surposed to be better but were out of my brothers price range
