SupraD06
Hi guys, been stripping out the engine bay over the last few days getting it all painted up and changing parts as i go. But having taken out all the turbo pipework, and vac lines, ive now noticed that ive got quite abit of oil gathering around the cam covers. Im guessing this isnt just build up from being 15 years old? Is there gaskets under the cam covers which may have perished? And if so are they easy enough to replace? any advice would be great Cheers Heres how its looking at the minute:
Rob W
Yea there is a rubber gasket that goes round the each of each cover, as they get older they perish. There about 10 quid each, Paul whiffin would probably have them in stock. Not much to change over, just unbolting them and replace seal, make sure no crud/dirt falls in as you take the covers off tho.
SupraD06
Cool, just been doing abit of a search and it seems that there are rubber washers under the bolts that hold down the covers, and when they start to perish they alloy play in the bolts, so it may be that i need to replace bolts/washers, and the two gaskets. I'll speak to Paul about it. Chhers for the reply.
tomgeer
Just try nipping them up a bit first, I read somewhere that they have a habit of working loose over time (sometimes even finger tight) mine was weeping a bit so gave it a slight nip up and no more leak
ashbuster
i had a little leak there too i decided to nip them up like tomgeer said, mine wasnt even finger tight so far so good
SupraD06
Cool, will have a look tomorrow and see just how tight they are. Chris Wilson posted on another thread about being carefull that you dont over do them as it may crack the casting. Ive sent Paul a pm about replacing everything, and from what ive found the gaskets should be around £20 for the pair, and then whatever it costs for some new nuts and washers. Might just do a swap of all the old seals to make sure its sealing well. Cheers guys
sideexitsupra
Another possible reason could be the front seals on the cams. When we're they last done?
SupraD06
No idea, the cars only just clocked 51000 miles, could look through the paperwork and check what was done at different services.
