barneybrendan
I thought the noise was down to a dodgy tensioner pulley, but after changing that the noise is still there.I sprayed the shaft behind the power steering pully with a silicone lubricant and the noise stopped for a fiew seconds. What is actually wrong with the pump.I presume there is a bearing sat in there that has descided its time it wants to be changed. Abz
Are you sure it is that or the crank pulley?

Might be best to just double check mate, I thought I had a dodgy pulley who made noise now and then but it turned out to be the crank pulley. Take it you already know about the tipex test to see if it has moved.

Abz
nope will see if i can find the thread. Couldn't find the actual thread, but this might give you a good idea. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?194385-Problem-number-1!&p=2474696&viewfull=1#post2474696 Basically the crank pulley shears away from the rubber part, if you tipex both parts in an line then you can tell if it is moving. Lude
Did you buy it new or second hand? Wew jumping the gun a bit here as you havent done the test yet...
barneybrendan
Done the test and the lines are still inline so its not that .Few.The aircon pump is not engaging ,would this cause any drag on the belt .I have now sprayed the flat side of the belt and it has gone away. GazzaGSi
Old thread I know but thought I may as well reply to this rather than start a new one. I also have a whine once the car is fired up and until I turn it off, stationary or moving. Tipex test came out all clear so the crank pulley is ok. It sounds like its coming from the power steering pump, best description without recording it would be it sounds like a bag of marbles spinning round. Sprayed the belt and it stopped for afew seconds then gradually it came back. How does spraying the belt stop the whine for afew seconds if the damage is internal to the pump? Brendan, did you change your pump in the end? Cheers
barneybrendan
spraying the belt makes it slip a bit lessening the load on the bearing that is bad.I fitted a smaller belt to do away with the aircon .This sorted my noise,My aircon was not engaging when turned on .Codes say it has no gas. GazzaGSi
I see. Think I'm going to have to look in to it a bit more before starting to buy parts etc. The power steering feels fine when driving, thought it may have felt heavy or something if it was on its way out. Dim Sum
Might try the tipex thing out too. Great find:)
