CJ
I am awaiting the go ahead from the forum(s) to start to sell raffle tickets for the items listed here but in the mean time, I would like your thoughts on how to sell online and therefore generate more sales than by just selling on the day. I am thinking of advertising on all the current forums that tickets can be bought at (for example) £2. You can pay via making a donation through the justgiving charity site (listed in my sig) for the number of tickets you wish to purchase. When you buy, you put the forum and your forum name down. You will then be allocated (on a first come basis and in buying order) a ticket number which will then be held on a separate list something like this: 1. CJ mkivsupra.net 2. Joe bloggs IMOC 3. Joe Bloogs IMOC 4. Fred Bloggs MR2OC 5. AJengines twobrutal I then publish a list on all the forums (with regular updates) that shows what number ticket you have purchased. I can then organise 2 sets of raffle tickets (one colour to show the online sales and one to be sold on the day of the draw at Austec and use the list to match up the tickets that get put into the hat to be able to identify the winner should they be lucky enough to get drawn out. Those tickets sold on the day will have the recipients details held on the stubs held in case they leave before the draw. I can make sure that everyone is aware of a cut off date and time for purchasing online and so nobody will be buying and not getting a ticket. What do you think? Any drawbacks? Negatives? RobUK
Something to note, just giving take 6% before giving the money to the charity, so for every £100 raised, £6 goes to just giving therefore leaving the charity with £94 Also I think there is something in the terms of just givings site that's says about receiving something for the gift... You might want to check Cheers

You might want to check Cheers We already have a just giving page set up for the Veilside Burning and you are right, they take 5% of donations and charge the charity £15 per month to be involved. Unfortunately, even though there are charges, it is the easiest way to get the money in and also allows people to see that their money is definitely going where we say it is. In this instance of a raffle, it also allows us to have a fixed list of people who have bought and so the buyers and us have a record which can be referred to. mawby
Unless you only offer these tickets as a private draw (i.e. if sold on this forum then only in the members only section) you will need to obtain a license as per the Gambling Act 2005

CJ
Yes I'm afraid so. Okey dokey - thanks for the info. Just awaiting the OK from the boss to advertise this properly. As an aside, would I be able to post a link in the normal section (as opposed to members only) to other forums that non members could access to buy tickets? Chucky_waR
In the UK, we have some strict laws concerning lotteries and raffles, as per the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976 and the National Lottery Act 1993. Large raffles are considered a form of gambling and therefore require a licence. There are three kinds of legal raffles. Small Raffle: If all your proceeds will go to charity and you intend to sell tickets only during the course of the event, a Small Raffle will suit your needs. Charge no more than one pound per ticket. You can give away any donated prizes, but may not have cash awards or spend over 250 pounds on prizes. You do not need a licence for this type of raffle. Private Raffle: If tickets will be offered only to a defined group, such as members of a club or employees of the same organisation, and the raffle will not be advertised or available outside this group, a Private Raffle will be appropriate. In this case, you will also not need a licence. Charity Raffle: If you want to sell raffle tickets amongst the general populace over a period of days, you will have to declare a Charity Raffle. Charge no more than 2 pounds per ticket and keep strict financial records. YOU MUST OBTAIN A LICENCE FROM THE GAMING BOARD OR LOCAL AUTHORITY FOR THIS! An alternative way to sell raffle tickets without a licence is to hold a Prize Competition. Rather than determining the winner by drawing, you will ask a quiz question and reward prizes to those who answer correctly. Since the Prize Competition is based on skill rather than luck, it is not a matter for the Gaming Board.
mawby
No, because you cannot advertise a private raffle outside of the defined group. A license is £40 according to Google, and you can legally claim that as an expense against the raffle proceeds if you wished. Of course, you could go ahead without a license and take your chances, but I'd be unsure about letting you advertise publicly here because I don't know if we could get in trouble for it as the law might see it as the club doing the advertising as it's on the clubs forum. Laws like this are always iffy. One thing that is clear though, you cannot sell any tickets to under 16s!
Chucky_waR
I guess the Private raffle is one you should be looking at. : If tickets will be offered only to a defined group, such as members of a club or employees of the same organisation, and the raffle will not be advertised or available outside this group, a Private Raffle will be appropriate. In this case, you will also not need a licence.

CJ
As I am only offering it to members of a private group then I assume I come under the private raffle rule.

mawby
As I am only offering it to members of a private group then I assume I come under the private raffle rule.A private group would be in the members only section here. Everywhere else is classed as public because this is a public forum. The same would have to apply to all the other forums you wished to advertise/sell on. I know it's a pain CJ; I went through all this when I was going to raffle off a car for the club a few years ago.

RCK10
If tickets will be offered only to a defined group, such as members of a club or employees of the same organisation, and the raffle will not be advertised or available outside this group So selling tickets to other forums void this then? I'm assuming their will be people outside this club at the raffle as well that are looking to buy tickets so you would be selling tickets to more than one group? As far as this forum is concerned (and that is only what should concern the mods and members) I will be selling in the members only section and therefore not breaking any rules.
