Has anyone on here taken a tour of Rome?

My girlfriend and I have our 4 year anniversary coming up in April and she has told me she'd like to go to Rome for the weekend. Seeing as were only going for a short period, i thought it would be prudent to try book something like a Tour so we could see as much of the city s possible before we have to leave. Has anyone on here been on a designated tour of the city that they can recommend? Something all inclusive would be brilliant where we could just pay one off set price and have everything sorted, but i dont mind booking Hotel/Flights seperate from the tour as long as the dates coincide. I'm looking online in the mean time, but i'm a bit rusty seeing as i've only been on holiday abroad once and i was 13....i'm now 27 lol.

yes mate but was on a cruies ship, got droped off in middle of rome and spent the day walking round but did find that most places for instance the Vatican, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps and the Coliseum can be very popular but close together. But on some days have long queues. but if you do not mind walking just get a map with the places you want to see marked on them and start walking. (if you are in a hotel they should have some tourist maps)

So good luck

As long as your hotel is in the historic quarter, just get a guide book and walk around, its great. Be prepared to queue to get into the Vatican. Also, go out for dinner late and listen out for Italians eating in the restaurant - it's the best way to pick a place with great food.

Rome is easy. Get the train from the airport and it will take you straight into the city centre. The best way to get around is on the open top buses. Buy a 24 hour ticket and then jump on and off as you like. Rome is quite a compact city and is easy to see all the sights. If you go to the vatican, ladies must have their shoulders covered. The best building in Rome is the Pantheon. Some of the city centre hotels are a bit basic so either accept this or be prepared to spend a bit more money. Its a great city though and we have always enjoyed it.

I went to Rome for a long weekend a few years back. As mentioned above I do recall that most of the major attractions could be done on foot pretty easily after a taxi ride (mental) from the hotel. IIRC there is a "dress code" of sorts for getting into the vatican. Something like no shorts for men and no skirts above the knee or revealing tops for girls? I certainly know that I saw some people being told to cover up when I was in there. Not sure if they still enforce it. I second the restaurant advice about finding where the locals eat. I stayed in a semi residential area away from the tourist attractions and most restaurants were local-y places. I do recall having more of a problem with language than Venice and Florence.

Don't pose for a toursit photograph with the "gladiators" in from of the Coloseum. Total rip off! :)

Watching with interest as I'm off there with the girlfriend in June. Staying at the Hotel H10 Roma which looks pretty good, just outside the centre and easy transport links. Good price too I think, whole week for £400 each including flights and transfers off Expedia

Doesn't Rome have a problem with beggars and pick pockets?

H.

They did when I was there, but you just have to keep your wits about you and your valuables out of reach. The best one I saw was a woman with a baby in the crook of her left arm and a big shawl draped over it so you couldn't see her left hand. She came up tot he guy behind me in the queue holding her right hand out under his face asking for money and while he was distracted she brought her left arm around in front of him and over the bum-bag he was wearing on the front of his belt. You couldn't see what she was doing because the baby and shawl hid everything.

I did a quick "Ahem, look out mate" to show him what was about to happen and she scarpered.

I went there with my family when I was about 10 and saw lots of beggar women with little kids. They were hassling a lot of people, but I didn't spot any thefts.

We went to all of the tourist attractions and it was great. I do recall people at the Vatican telling people in the queue to cover up before they went in.

I'd love to go back, and as the girlfriend is half Italian, she'd love to go too :)

I went there to propose to my wife. Thought it was a bit of a shit hole with a few really nice bit. Vatican state was nice though. Watch for bent taxi drivers tugging at your suit case at the airport. Only use white cabs or you will get scammed for € 80 when the white ones have to charge €40 by law.

we went for a day trip on a cruise. your right. its covered in grafiti, everywhere. insanely busy with people. cars park everywhere. including on the pavement 3 deep.

as we were with a cruise tour we had a guide. but id not go near the place on my own. it was the single most crowded place iv ever been. trevi fountain was full of pickpockets. and so many people you couldnt see the damn thing. the coleseum was ok people wise. but we jumped the que to get in. which as huge. same with the vatican. a lot of nice artwork and statues etc but its so full of people it distracts from it.

and with so many people at close quaters. the smell is... interesting.
