I'm jumping the gun a bit here, but a couple of other common causes are:

- low brake fluid

- broken aftermarket speed converter

Both of these should be accompanied by the orange engine icon symbol being lit, but it's quite common for that light not to be working due to dry solder etc.

hhmmm not havin much joy, so far i have checked all bulbs, all levels, door sensors, one strange thing is that the light is always on but if i open a door for example the light will go slightly brighter, if it cant come on for anything serious then i might just remove the light. as im trying to sell it and dont want to put anybody off.

You are going to remove an error warning indicator because you don't want a potential buyer to be put off? What a nice guy you are, if something happens to the next owner I hope you end up in jail.

Sounds simple but if my hand brake isnt pushed down when its off my light stays on... (even a little bit.. think its because i but a new thicker leather surround on mine though)

You have no idea what it is though to suggest that it ISN'T something serious. The car you bought has been nothing but trouble, I'm not surprised you're selling it, but just because you got shafted by buying a bucket doesn't mean you should pay it forward to the next innocent owner.

FWIW the light is an indication of a braking issue, if you don't see that as something potentially serious, when you can't even determin what the fault is, then there is something wrong.
