Ian W
Guys (and gals) I'm gonna be changing my mobile to what will likely be an iPhone 4S soon. I'm with O2 at present but the OH is on 3 and they seem to be doing much better deals (including all you can eat data) than anyone else. What does everyone think of the 3 network these days? I know it used to be crap but it seems like they've caught up with the rest due to their recent upgrades and acquisitions? Lastly, my O2 contract has a few months to run although I'm quite happy to let this run down at minimum cost once I downgrade the tariff. If I transfer my 'old' number to my new contract, will O2 just give me a new number for the contract that's due to expire soon? Thanks in advance everyone Ian
Attero
You can transfer your number and the old one disappears. I find O2 to be terrible these days. No data signal at all. 3 offer signal in most places but lack good signal for calls/text apparently.
Ian W
Totally agree. I was with orange for ten years before they went down hill, now O2 are doing the same. Think I'll try 3 or perhaps back to Orange?
Abz
Depends on area Ian, in London 3 seemed to be good. They do offer some excellent deals though, hence why I got a spare mobile at home so then no one ran up the home line. Though customer service isn't great, but they do offer you good deals. Scott
Not sure on 3 but I understand that they have came on leaps and bounds from where they were previously. I would recommend T-Mobile over Orange though, if you decide to go down that route. T-Mob offer much better deals and they now share the carriers with Orange so you get twice the chance of coverage. I was with Vodafone for years but felt they went downhill so I switched to T-Mobile, I don't have any complaints to speak of yet
Fitz
I've been on 3 for a few years now, never had any problems and I used to work for them for 3 years . I'd definitely recommend giving them a try as they have invested an incredible amount of money upgrading their masts and system capacity. The tariffs that 3 do are very generous in terms of offering against price also. There will always be a time when you may not get signal due to location but thats the same with all networks, you have 'blackspots'. I'd recommend giving them a go but it's all down to choice. Ian W
Thanks all. Think I'll give 3 a go, their deals just can't be beaten it would seem. My only question would be, if I request my PAC code from o2 will provide a new number to see out the remainder of the contract or will they just cancel it and expect me to pay the balance? Graham1984
Make sure you phone them up to tell them you are leaving as orange wanted 30day notice otherwise they just add on a month at a time........ It is strange how you signup for a 24month contract yet you have to say you are leaving and that they can just add on another month if you don't check the small print.... defeats the idea of a set limit contract in my eyes. Ian W
That's a shame. Oh well, the cash mazuma etc offer me for my old phone will cover that thankfully.
Graham1984
To be honest unless your phone is perfect I wouldn't sell to them as they will do anything to get out of paying top whack and when it is sent to them they are legally allowed to pay you what it is worth after inspection. You might find it easier to just recycle it with the networks shop instead as my old blackberry 8520 was only worth say £50 anyway but the speakerphone had issues and the keypad scroll was starting to play up and I still got £36 from orange whereas if I sent it to mazuma or envirophone they would of deemed it not working and I would of got £10. Ian W
It's not perfect, but works. Buttons all okay etc, just superficial scratches on the top of the case.
Graham1984
There are plenty of comparison sites to use to see where pays you the most, Normally if you accept vouchers for a store you can get a better payout. http://www.sellmymobile.com Just verify the price on that companies website when you choose one to make sure it is right and it might be worth comparing the non working costs against each other too. Scott
I've never had an issue selling with the likes of mazuma. They have never tried to negotiate any price with me, and some of the phones I've sent have been on the squeaky side of gubbed.

TubbyTwo
I left O2 and moved to Orange so much better, even get signal out in the sticks. Looked at 3 but was put off by people at work who struggle sometimes with slow speeds or poor signal at times. Very much depends on the area. IIRC Johnny G on here is on 3 with alot of work phones and doesnt have a problem.
fastcar
I went from orange to 3 on my iPhone about 2 years ago and they have been great. I always get signal and 3G Internet where ever I am. I also have there mobile broadband aswell for the lapto. I have a mate that is on O2 and his Internet is really slow on the iPhone. To be honest I think 3 is now one of the best mobile phone companies in the country at the moment you won't regret going with them and they have some really good deals. Konrad
Customer service in 3 was a reason I left them - took 3 days to finally convince bloody robot on the other side of the line that I don't want to have anything to do with them.
Ian W
Question.....is it worth paying an extra £30 up front for a plan that will allow me to tether the phone for internet use? More so, couldn't I just go with the cheaper pre-payment option then upgrade the contract? Basically looking at the 'text 500 all you can eat' which is £36 per month, £29 up front but no tethering Or the 'one plan' which is the same per month but £49 up front and will allow tethering? Surely the tethering is a function of the phone? Or do they disable it with their custom firmware? If that's the case just flash it Galaxy SII has wireless tether..... I use it from time to time
johnny g
I've got my personal phone, and the company phones all on Three. Coverage in the cities, generally, is great. Speed is excellent. Never had an issue yet, in just over a year. We've been able to do away with 3G cards too, by using the All You Can Eat Data plans. I'd highly recommend them, if you live in a coverage zone. Get a free sim from them and pop it in your phone to make sure.
Ian W
I thought that too, Scott. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure whether I'd use tethering anyway....I could on my current phone but never have done. Thanks, Johnny.
