possible overheat problem?

Hi guys,

Well today was the first day i got to take my new NA to TT swap out for a good run after she flew through the MOT! however i did notice the engine was running really hot. but the temp guage was sitting just below halfway.

on the way back from my litte motorway run of which i was not pushing it just giving it a good run checking all the gears etc, i got the the garage and noticed steam coming from the side of the bonnet. when i opened the bonnet i could see coollent running out but could not see where it was coming from!

i hopped straight back in to the car can got it home asap. its only a 1min drive from my house.

got home and jacked it up, had a good look but still can see where it came from.... even ran the engine for a bit and there was nothing leaking! i checked the coolent level, and that was ok, the only possible thing i can think of is it was coming from the expansion tank?? i did check it and the was coolent in there but only filled to about a quater of the way up.

Any thoughts??

See how much coolant you have lost first which you'll find out when you top

the rad up.

It could be the rad cap needs replacing which is the first thing to check, is your heater working properly

and nice and hot on max temp setting ?

no sir, you need to change that rad....

i recommend the mishimoto 3-core or something along those lines in case you want to upgrade in the future...the NA rad will definitely not work..

also, are you running clutch fan or electrical fans?...clutch fan is the way as it pushes more air than typical electrical fans (even the mishimoto double fans)

im saying all this because i did the same NA to TT swap and encountered an overheating problem until i changed the rad to a aluminium 3-core and re-installed my clutch fan setup.

(then again, the daily temp. where i live is around 34 degrees celcius..lol)

The radiator cap sounds like the culprit. What it does is it allows a certain amount of pressure to build up before opening....what greater pressure in the cooling system gives you is higher operating temperatures. If your cap is opening too early its allowing the water to boil at too low a temperature and causing 'overheating'....a new cap will fix it....:)

(I'm assuming that there is no bubbling in the rad when you rev it though, bubbling can point to HG issues)
