headgasket... i think the initial problem was caused from a water hose to the bulkhead. toyota crap clip must have lost its strengh and was leaking under pressure. i think it must have lost its coolant over time as fitz didnt check the water levels.... thing is you would not have seen it drip etc as soon as it leaked out, it touches the metal hot pipe and evaporates so not too obvious....

quicker and easier to swap the engine over! by the time you strip one down to inspect, then could find a problem with the head etc...waste of time....i have a couple of na engine in stock i know are perfect so makes sense to swap it out...

Pretty much what i thought seeing as it had overheated properly on more than 1 occaision

Runs like a dream again :)

 

As Keron stated, I had a new engine put in to save the hassle. It wasn't financially viable or time friendly to have the head stripped down, skimmed (if within tolerence) etc etc.
