adam1983
As the title says really. Has anyone heard if VAT is staying at 20% when April comes or if it will be going back down to 17.5%? I was under the impression when it was introduced last year it would be temporary. I have googled it and can't find anything really mentioned about it. Maybe too early to be mentioned? Westy
It will no doubt stay the same...in reality only decreases in costs/prices are temporary! It will not be questioned and we will all carry on regardless.
tbourner
It won't change, if anything it would probably go up.
adam1983
Really annoying if it does stay at 20%. It would encourage people to start spending money again if they brought the rate back down and also help small businesses out too. If the government are so desperate for money then they should cut the amount they give out to all the scum who have never worked a day in their lives and get extra money every time they have more kids. The country is so backwards the way it punishes the hard working individuals.
David P
Income tax was introduced as a temporary fund raiser, so don't get your hopes up.

The Raven
I pay 20% VAT on everything. I charge 5% VAT on the work i do, then claim the VAT back. Im yet to pay the VAT man a penny he sends me the money. Aways welcome as i dont do the VAT myself i never know how much im due. Last month was only £300 but ive had ones of over 1k. Abz
Yep as above, and don't be surprised if it goes up to 22% either. Your earning gets taxed heavily and then everything you buy then gets taxed again, then when you are home you get taxed for being in a house. When you poop you then get taxed again on the water bill, the toilet paper you brought is taxed too... not forgetting the tax you paid on your car, fuel and insurance (don't forgot the servicing and parts too tax) to go to the shops to buy the loo roll tax! Rant over! No wonder the chap I brought my car from emigrated out to Kuwait!
Ian W
Would you really buy more if the VAT was reduced? Probably not imo, I'd likely just be happy that my shopping etc was a few quid cheaper every week. Not that I agree with it, I still think the whole thing stinks and would emigrate in a heart beat right now.

adnanshah247
asking this question is the same as asking if petrol prices will jump down? why would the government now raking in the cash want to reduce tax and lower the income in thier pockets? they wont and as usual, us hard working muppets continue to bail out the countries economic mistakes it made. i honestly find it pathetic, wont be long until we end up like the people of greece. adam1983
Abz I love the rant mate Tax in our country is just like being back in robin hood times again. Daylight robbery and nothing we can do about it. I don't even bother looking at my pay statement anymore due to it annoying me so much with the tax. adam1983
Welcome to a "democracy" where the majority vote wins. The problem they have now is there are such a large amount of people living off the benefits system that the politicians are too scared to change the money they get due to losing votes. The only way they could change it now is if they took away their rights to vote which is never going to happen. They even give voting rights to criminals in jail which I find very odd. Every little helps - not that the right honourable in prison are any less than any one of us Its interesting to see who part of the population seem to be breeding over the past 20-30 years and they continue to breed - so sorry to be the bearer of bad news - this is just a vicious circle that will get worse - we have probably gone past event horizon without knowing it

Wars are pretty expensive business too you know! Though I do agree with you Adam, but some changes have been made with the new government in place, like a £400 housing cap benefit. Which is brought in 10 years ago would have netted us millions! You had people living in property (central London) which had rental expenses of £1,000 a week that were funded by us the tax payer. If it was a short term solution or someone living there worked for a long period and needed help I am all for that, but single mother with 4 kids with 4 different fathers are being told... get pregnant, we will look after you in this plush apartment (one being the ex wife of my friend!). Ah yes, I was discussing that the other day with my colleague, apparently it is now any assets worth more then £350,000! Also that is like 40% or something silly like that... so even when you are dead, they are taxing you!! Madness!
