TRD3000GT
I need a network hard drive that the whole company can use to store files and prepared word documents and such.. I have been looking at the Iomega Network Hard Drive 160 GB Ethernet unit. For £125 it looks like one HELL of a good deal... Is it possible to plug this in and set it up on my network so that I can have **SAFE PASSWORD PROTECTED** access to it via an FTP kind of system? The same way I think Chris Wilson just set his up? What software will I need and how easy would it be to set this sort of thing up ?
DamanC
If its like the 'click' drives i have setup in the past the drive should act as a PC. User Accounts can then be setup on the drive in order to gain acess and then if need be shares and share permissions all done by a web interface
martynb
If you are in the market for this kind of thing take a look at the Buffalo Terastation - 1 Terabyte of space including built in RAID 5 for redundancy. I think they are around £500 at the moment which makes them top value. Just a thought
Jake
I run a FTP on my home PC using BulletProof FTP Server Works great and it's really simple to set up.
Pete
I'm not quite sure what you want to achieve. Portable data? (Easy to steal) Want it encrypted on the disk in this case? Will need some data encryption software so that if you plug it into another device you can't read it. Looking to restrict access to internal network users? Your Windows can do this by setting user schemes (make sure it's formatted with NTFS) Or are we talking about external remote secure access? What Chris wanted to achieve was basically be able to share files with his friends and allow them to transfer files to him. I suggested he used Serv-U FTP (Which I think he does) as this allows you to setup users, give them permissions to up/download, assign user areas and parts of the HDD they can use. He port forwards FTP (20/21) traffic to the PC on the internal network running the FTP server. What's your main reason for wanting an external drive? The negatives are pretty hefty - theft I mentioned, how about loosing it? Dropping it? The Kids smashing it? Bye bye data!
Pete
Oh I see - It's a kind of NAS. I wonder what the software is like on it...Strange idea. Probably web based?
