jcbt
Hi guys can you give me some advice - Recently noticed a slight puff of blue smoke on start up. It quickly disappears and I'm not getting it at any other time even under hard accelaration - is this the first sign of anything potentially major that I need to look into. Westy
Valve stem seals are the most likely cause I think mate.
Peter P
Mine is acting in a similiar fashion mate. Not sure if it could be the weather conditions as well though? Wouldn't have thought it would be anything more serious than valve stem seals though (although these aren't cheap to replace! ). I also don't use the car that often (it's in the garage all week on trickle charge), so not sure if leaving it standing is a partial cause? As you said, only happens for a couple of seconds on start up and then clears. No smoke when boosting so don't think it's turbos, and engine pulls well. tony tt
As westy says mate money's on valve stem seals dude!
Guigsy
Yep. If it only does it for a sec or 2 after a week standing doing nothing don't worry. Just keep an eye on oil level. When it gets to the point after a few days or overnight it's doing it quite badly then I'd get them done. Won't cause any damage. Think they cost about 1k to do as it's a lot of labour. That's what mine were. Seems to crop up about 110k miles. But mine lasted till 130-40 till I changed them
Samurai 20V
As above.. As a quick fix for my smokey car I changed from 10W30 to 10W50 oil, it helped decrease the smoke a fair deal..
jcbt
Thanks Guy's Mine is also garaged all week the same as Peter P's - is this issue just a coincidence? How much is it to get valve stem seals replaced?
jcbt
Thanks Guigsy - mine has only done 57k miles so is it still likely to be the seals?

Peter P
As Guigsy mentioned it's around £1K to get these changed mate Lots of labour involved in removing and then fitting the new ones, putting everything back together etc. Think mine is meant to be around the 80K mark mileage wise, so bit suprised if they need doing already!! Is this oil to use when running a single? ie bigger power?
carlmhtt
My car has done less thn 80k and needed them doing, I think age plays as much a part as mileage. They just go hard and leak. Mine got quite bad although it was most probably turbo seals as well on mine. As mentioned, it's around £1000 for the job which is mainly labour as the seals themselves are less than £30 from memory. I have been doing the job myself and compared to rovers, vauxhalls and fords which I have worked on In the past, the supra is like the space shuttle. I think you need to be quite confident to do the job yourself, or else just poor like me and have no choice...
Chris Wilson
They are a LOT more than £30, unless you risk Ebay Taiwanese ones. I have one set of proper new stem seals sat here I'd like rid of....

I certainly bought mine from Toyota as I would not even contemplate cheap alternatives given the amount of work to replace them.
Samurai 20V
Is this oil to use when running a single? ie bigger power? Should be, I am using the HKS JZ-G series oil, designed for the JZ series engine.. It is probably just some other rebadged oil, it was on special so I bought it.. Engine was noticeably quieter..
