heckler
Best thing is to set your budget first rather than looking at a specific brand - this can the dictate to what you ann get.
Supra Gaz
I have bought some stupidly expensive mountain bikes over the years, Cannondale are my current favorite brand, good prices, really good spec gears, brakes and forks if you are happy to spend around £600, Evans usually have some on offer, this is a good spec bike http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cannondale/trail-sl-3-2012-mountain-bike-ec031492 . Here is my current daily ride to work bike, its better than the £1300 Specialized i had before it. http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cannondale/trail-sl-5-2012-mountain-bike-ec031494

I have an Orange bike which I sometimes use to cycle, though it is setup as a hybrid as I hardly take it off road. They do some top quality bikes: http://www.orangebikes.co.uk/

If you are interested pm me with a realistic budget and what size bike you would want and i will see if i can help you out.

There are loads of different brands to choose from. I have just bought a Cube mountain bike, really well spec'd for the money so you could maybe have a look at these. This is the one I have just bought: http://www.cube.eu/en/hard/ltd/ltd-pro-grey-metal-black/

jon5698
I have a CUBE Ltd race and can second the quality of them, the only thing i feel i had to change was the pedals and fitted some different grips.

Yep the quality is top notch. Although I also ditched the pedals straight away for some SPD's
