terribleturner
For all those who are bored today (or the next week), anyone wanna design the track for the Bovingdon meet?? Gonna have a few goes myself, but if anyone wants to have a go then please do. The track is about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile long and about 18 car widths wide. Below is a template for you to have a play with. Have fun

terribleturner
I was actually hoping you would be the one to come up with a design Trig. Looks good, will have to print it off and look at it with the other ones i've done. Anyone else wanna go??
Trig
I made a slight error tho. My track is only one car width wide!!
terribleturner
That's alright, may be slightly safer if we have one car go round at a time, sort of F1 qualifying laps so to speak.
Suprasteve
what about just having one side of the track straight or at least a sweeping bend and the other side with all the tight bends? just a suggestion...
terribleturner
Well to give everyone a fair chance we can't have too long a straight as we don't want the cars to get up to top speed. Have a play Steve and stick up your design.
Trig
That's alright, may be slightly safer if we have one car go round at a time, sort of F1 qualifying laps so to speak. How many laps do you think we will get each??
RedM
How about a 270 degree bend to the right that starts gentle and tightens right up, followed immedately by a sharp 180 to the left? Could be an interesting test.
terribleturner
Well the set up now means we can get people doing the 1/4 miles AND the track at the same time. My first idea was for each car to have a warm up lap followed by flying lap and then cool down (F1 Style) meaning you only get the the one lap time. This way you can go back and try to break it. It all depends on who wants to have a go at it so can't really say how many laps/timings you'll get. 10+ i reckon though.
TRD3000GT
I would much prefer this sort of track... In the space we are talking about we are not going to be able to get much speed up on such a tight course..
Bobbeh
^^ Looks a mini version of Fuji speedway
SimonB
Guys, you can't have a single car width on a track! It'd be like driving round a car park. One of the whole challenge of track driving is in picking the best lines through corners. Even the tightest track is at least 4 car widths, the wider the better. Trig
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2962/designatrack6ua.jpg Heres a revised one but still think it needs to be wider We might just have to try it on the day. I take it we are marking the circuit with cones??
terribleturner
Yes cones or similar will mark out the course, so it can all be moved on the day to get the best of the area and the cars. If we get a general idea of what we'd like then on the day we can play with it and see what's best.
SimonB
What you want is the minimum number of cones you can get away with, otherwise you'll spend all day picking them up, and it'll look confusing from inside the car. That's what track day organisers try for. Is it just an open area that is going to be coned out? If so, you'll need to make sure there is enough run-off area particularly on the outside of corners and after braking zones, so if you lose it you won't crash through a line of cones and straight into the path of a car going round the other side of the circuit. Trig's looks OK from that point of view, apart from maybe the right hand end where the corners are a bit close. Is there someone from Bovingdon that could suggest something for us - they should know the best way of doing it?
terribleturner
Is there someone from Bovingdon that could suggest something for us - they should know the best way of doing it? I doubt it as all they do there at the moment is a large market It' an open area surrounded by fields, so if you do find your not going to make it and don't have enough room (which there should) you'll just start ploughing up the wheat I was gonna go with a minimal coned section, but i thought just 1 cone at each end would have been slightly boreing. I've also got red and white tape which will be used to mark the course out.
