Hi all

Question from the other half last week...... "Next Year, do you fancy hiring a car and driving around America?"

Eeeerm - let me have a while to digest... nope, no need - Hell Yeah! :littled:

Didn't think it would be her cup of tea, but have no intention of talking her out of it!

So..... I have massaged the plan slightly to include the hire of a Classc Convertible (Mustang / Corvette) and maybe drive (a bit of) Route 66

Has anyone on here actually done this (or similar)? Any tips / things I need to take into account?

Cheers All

A Very Happy Flash :thanku:

After I finished Uni I went to the states for five weeks and for the second half hired a car and drove everywhere :D

We picked up the car in Vegas then drove to the Grand Canyon then back over to California where we satyed in Santa Barbara. After that we drove up the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 101 if i remember rightly) which was amazing with some fantastic twisty cliff top roads

We then cut across to Yosemite National park and finally finished up in San Francisco. In total we drove about 2000 mile and had an amazing time.

I couldnt recommend this more, one thing to look at is sorting your car out here as it will probably be cheaper. Its also quite expensive to pick up a car in one location then drop it off in another. The day our car had to be back, we turned up an hour late and they charged us an extra $100 :thumbdown

All in all though had a great few weeks :D

Did a similar route to Stu. Flew into San Francisco and did a fly drive for 3 weeks staying in Motel 6 mostly. Flag Staff, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellow Stone, Las Vegas, Salt Lake city etc and ended up in LA.

Great trip

Driven from Seattle, down through Oregon and California eventually arriving in Los Angeles. Drove from there out to Las Vegas stopping in Barstow which I think is on route 66.

I would recommend doing something like this with hesitation.

Only downside was our hire car, a Ford Probe.

Drove 4,950 miles in a little over 2 weeks around the American southwest last year! Have driven around there loads, roads and scenery are great - best I've managed was 1,550 miles in 2 days (Phoenix, AZ - Sacramento, CA, sightseeing Monument Valley, N. rim of Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Yosemite on the way)! Favourite states are Utah and Arizona, least favourite New Mexico.

I worked in Arizona&Utah in 1993. Travelled loads after the job finished - hitching, greyhound & Amtrak.

Drove the Las Vegas,LA, San Fran, Reno, Salt Lake, Flagstaff, Vegas circle.

Spent separate spells in Denver, Chicago & New York. In San Bernardino,LA was walking along the street, turned corner and there was a car show in the streets - muscle cars, hot rods, dragsters quality!

All of it a great experience.

Would still like to visit Oregon & Washington state, then the New England states - though never given a monkeys about going to Florida
