The SMIC is ducted, air flowing across the front of the car is forced to pass through the IC core. A lot of FMIC's are simply bolted on without any ducting, often there are gaps around the sides of the FMIC. Air passing over the front of the car will take the path of least resistance and flow around the IC core through these gaps, rather than through the core.
