dpepper
I have a noise coming from brakes, not really a squeal, more of constant squeak, even when not braking. i dont use car everyday, and did notice bit of surface rust on discs so did think thats all it was, but wont go away. Does anyone know if this is some sort of tell tale device that lets you know your pads are low, cos i used to have a celica which did that, or is it just crap in there? If I need pads, does anyone know what type of standard pads i need for a j-spec 94 TT with aftermarket 17's on Any help would be very appreciated. Alex
I'm fixing mine today...it started with that...I'm now replacing the entire rear brake system 'cause the piston on one side has siezed and the slider on the other is also buggered. The should you can hear is caused by the caliper in one way or another not releasing the pad from the disk. Its a common thing for early cars nowadays. Whip off the wheels and test them out before impulse buying replacement parts. Once you've got em off undo the top and bottom 14mm bolts - this will release the caliper from the slider. If you can move the rubber bits on the slider (they go in and out about 2cm's) then its the caliper. Try to gently wind the caliper piston back in (you have to undo the cap to the master brake resevoir (under the bonnet, back left)) I used a g-clamp and some a piece of metal to protect the piston. If it pretty much impossible to move the piston its knackered. Your car is now really not road worthy until you have new parts. Contact Chris Wilson at [email protected] for replacement calipers. Digsy
Assuming your pads are standard Toyota parts, they have noisemakers built in to alert you when they are low. Once they contact the disc, the make noise almost continually. If you check you should find you have about 1mm of pad left somewhere! Theye is another thread running about pad part numbers. Alex
Ahh just re-read your post. If you have the larger UK spec brakes behind those wheels ingnore the slider part and concentrate on the pistons...as the UK spec is piston only, it has no sliders! The larger UK brakes will have pistons on both sides of the disc, the fronts will have Supra written on them. But having the fronts does not guarentee you have a matching set front to rear as they UK brakes are apopular upgrade... If you're more confused now. Take a photo and post it on here for conformation Darren, you just had to be positive and say it was the just the pads being low!
Digsy
Sounds like he has standard JDM brakes but 17" wheels to me. Its one or the other - worn pads or fooked calipers!
