Advice on a new car

Chaps, the time has come to replace the Supra, and I'm after a little advice. I'm in no major rush, as I want a little time with the Sup through summer but I need something that ticks these boxes:

- 4 door

- 30+ (pref closer to 40) mpg

- decent performance (240+ bhp)

- saloon ish (not estate/avant or 4x4)

- budget in the region of £35k - £40k but would prefer to spend around £30 max if poss.

I've been looking at Audi A4/A6 3.0l quattros and BMW 530/535 sports but wanted some opinions. I'm open to all suggestions and experienced advice appreciated (if you've owned a car in this bracket which has exceeded your expectations)

Oh, looks are quite important :)

My dad has a A6 3L diesel which ive driven glasgow to manchester several times and is a joy on the motorway. It has a really smooth ride and does well over 40 mpg on the long runs. He drives it daily around the west end of glasgow, still getting 35 mpg.

The car has some amount of torque and feels faster in a straight line than his S5 (but it cant match the sound of a 4.2 V8 :D ).

As far as im concerened, Audi's are cars you just cant go wrong with but they have taken over BMW's as the merchant-banker-mobile.

I'd look into the Lexus range of cars, I have driven a lot of cars & these seem to always stick in mind.

When the IS220d came out, I drove about 500 miles over the weekend & it was superb. Loads of toys, comfy ride, felt special & not mass produced to a lot of current cars like the BMW 3 series & Mercedes C/E Class. Also the GS is a good range too inc the Hybrid collection which should help when doing city driving.

Lexus feels less mass-produced than Merc and BMW? I'd have to beg to differ there mate!

Not the whole range dude, and you would know more than me but don't you find the new C Class, 3 Series Dash & interior very plasticy & cheap? Especially the new C Class? I have been quite disappointed with them lately or is this just me? The 5 feels much better in comparison, as does the S class.

I love the new C-Class... in fact I like it that much I'm getting my parents to buy one. BMW isn't, and never will be, far behind. Lexus can't hold its own in that particular fight IMHO :)
