Gaz B
On initial pillow away in 1st, theres a judder from either the gearbox or the n/s rear wheel. Abit vague but I'm still trying to determine what it is. Any suggestions are welcome.

Dnk
I'd check the easy thing first and jack the rear wheels up off the floor and see how freely they rotate and listen for any metalic grinding noises from wheel bearing, handbrake shoes or seizing caliper. If you've driven the car check for one rear being hotter than the other as it could be a caliper seizing. Dont touch the wheel but feel the air temp near the caliper !! Also more info req really to help narrow down the issue Edited February 16, 2012 by Dnk (see edit history)
neo2810
Define "shudder"? Are you talking about a shuddering that feels like the clutch is failing to disengage properly? If you pull off with higher rev's does it improve? If the answer is yes, then you probably have the issue I've just fixed, which is the beginnings of a failing release bearing on your clutch, coupled with a dirty rod so the bearing isn't moving freely along the splice. A new bearing at £50ish and a good clean and light grease of the rod will sort it right out. The alternative could be just a worn clutch plate or heat spots on the flywheel affecting decent contact between the 2. If you're going to access the clutch, you may as well replace the release bearing, cover, and clutch plate and have a good look at the flywheel to check it's condition. Gaz B
I've had another go in it. Feels like the handbrake is sticking but everytime after its fine. I think the clutch plate and flywheel may be good shout. If I pull away with a few more rom it does seem to clear it.its a manual box by the way. I will check the rear calibers as well just to cover all the bases.

Noz
Are u NA or TT? I have a slight whining in my gearbox since I put loads of power through it. I have the NA w58 manual box. Have you checked the oil recently?
Pulley
Sounds like clutch Judder to me
TheTurtleshead
Do you know what clutch you are running? If it's a paddle clutch expect it to judder if pulling away with 'normal' revs. You will have to use a few more to be smooth with a paddle
absz
Dual mass flywheel maybe?
Ian C
Could be oil on the clutch plate causing sharp slips.
Gaz B
Ive noticed that the pedal is come really high in a short period of time. Sneaky suspicion that its just knackered.
welshbuddy
as before you could be running a competetion clutch, which mine judders when i pull off within low revs, higher revs is fine. biting point if basically on or off!:.
Pig
Is the clutch slipping at any point? Does it stall if you leave the hand break on, put in 5th and lift clutch with same amount of revs you would normally use to take off. If it stalls, then the clutch shouldn't be totally warn out and if it slips then then probably answers your question. Also, it won't be the handbrake if it is happening everything you start, it would only be the first time after applying the handbrake. (unless totally seized) I once had a sized caliper or handbrake (can't remember which) and shuddering was not a symptom. Best best as already said, spin wheels manually to check just to rule out. My money is on the clutch.
