Noz
I think it's also having to face the amount of time you've spent on the car as well. If I was to sell mine, I'd have to somehow justify the amount of time and effort I'd already put into it to myself.

I would agree 100%, but if I had set my sights on buying a six speed TT I don't think I would be viewing autos with a g/ box conversion in mind, very different from modding your own pride and joy and the next level project. Quite interesting views.

This is the reason my Wife wouldn't let me put mine up for sale when I was threatened with redundancy. She said it was the last thing to go, and she hates it. Eddie-S
It's because people are impatient and money is burning a hole in their pockets. They have enough for "a Supra" but not enough for "the Supra they really want". Waiting is not an option for some, they kid themselves an engine or gearbox swap down the line will cost the same, and they get a Supra shaped car NOW. they are deluding themselves. Look me in the eye and tell me I'm wrong You're wrong! I bought mine not even wanting a TT or manual and like many others bought it on the condition of the car. Yes the car deserves more power and I am considering a TT/NA-T conversion because the car is pretty much how I want it, but it's not a priority and I don't wish that I had bought TT over NA to start with

welshbuddy
I bought an NA knowing I would want more power! The way we've dine it works out a lot cheaper then buying a tt straight out, Meh

If that's your logic then I guess Chris is indeed wrong.
Benjy
Because it was pretty. Cheap, i knew the history, and i thought "it's got the right gearbox, the engine's a minor issue that can be tackled when I get older!" Insurance on the NA was difficult at 20 as it was. Talking of TT6 conversions... Anyone wanna buy an E36 BMW M3 Evolution!?
Havard
Exactly why I saved and bought the Supra I currently have...it's exactly what I was after! That sounds like madness... I bought an NA 5 speed because I wanted one. Waited a while, found one with low (ish) miles with OEM skirts, 18" wheels. Ran it for three and a half years and then decided I wanted/needed more power. I sold the NA. I then waited for a decent TT to come up for sale and probably waited for 5 months with 10K in my pocket. I now have a VVTi Tip with 60K miles on the clock, 18" wheels, OEM skirts, active spoiler, leather seats ande UK brakes. Besides a service, this car has cost me nothing in mods. I suppose it depends on how long you are willing to wait for the perfect car. I personally couldn't buy a car that didn't tick the majority of my boxes as I begrudge spending silly amounts of money on a car that you have no chance of getting back. I have always tried to find a car where some idiot has already done the hard work for me... H.
Hellstrom
is it not cheaper to buy a N/A and then buy the needed parts for lets say a TT engine? thats what i thought. Some might want to learn abit aswell. Sure the money burning in the pockets are probebly true. but i like to put in some work myself and actually learn from it. i did buy a tt6 but iam doing some serious work with the engine like a total rebuild etc. could have been avoided if i went for a more expensive supra with it done i guess. Talking of TT6 conversions... Anyone wanna buy an E36 BMW M3 Evolution!? I wish I brought the sz-r in hindsight but to be honest my car fits my finances at the moment so any conversion or turbo options are a way off yet. At least on the brightside Ben you have the 6speed box which is easily half the battle for any NA-t-tt ideas.
James
I wanted a white manual TT. I knew of an NA-TT 5 speed for sale and was happy to go with that. I couldnt afford a TT6. I could have waited and saved but decided not to as I really wanted a stock facelift 040 TT6 and it would have taken a lot of saving (cheapo student blah blah ). This way I've had some good experience with my current car. Bad experience too but at least that has happened to this one. My intentions are to get saving once I graduate and buy a facelift TT6 when I can. I'll then break/sell my current car to fund some bits (suspension, wheels etc.) for the right car. Dim Sum
It could be also people want to put there own styling onto the car and make it a bit more personal to themselves and maybe three or fours years down the line you can say i did that Start from stock and then work till in your opinion its finish and make your mark on the car. Yeah, I have seen a lot of Supras that have had the owners "mark" left on them. They remind me of a pair a discarded underpants..!! H. If that's your logic then I guess Chris is indeed wrong. That's not what I said. I bought the car not even considering whether it was a TT or NA just a car I liked. Just as many people by a car not thinking if they are going to change bumpers/Wheels/spoilers/going single etc but end up doing it because they change their mind. With your logic if someone wants an extra bedroom on their house why build and extension just sell up and buy a bigger house or better still buy a bigger house to start with. perfectly logical until you add the, probably, emotional factors that come into play

To make it simple, a really nice auto might come up for £5-6k, and quite often the buyer says first job is a 6 speed manual box, well a rough estimate for the work maybe £4k ish, my thought is, surely a stunning manual car can be found for £10k or thereabouts. It is just something I've always wondered but never asked.
