CJ
Is it just me that finds these distasteful? Why do we consider celebrities fair game to make fun of when they die? Would we post up the same "jokes" if a fellow member had lost a friend or family member in the same circumstances? I doubt it very much. Well I was going to say the same in a certain thread but imagine I would have got a load of abuse.

Graham1984
I think it is mainly because they seam like they are so far away from us in life and other worldly which makes them appear fair game. In comparison we appear more normal as we use a public forum which makes us feel more like a close knit community although in reality it should be just the same like you said, If that makes sense. Josh
If it's a self inflicted death or the celeb was a bit off, they're normally joked about. Michael Jackson for example was a complete loon. If it's a normal celeb that's just died of old age, they don't tend to be made fun of IMO.

Josh
And so if a fellow member had a friend or relative who committed suicide do you think the masses would joke about it? Not at all. I'll agree with some of the above then, they seem so far away from us "normal" people, it doesn't feel like it would affect anyone. I'm just giving an opinion, I'm not making any of the jokes. johnny g
Depends on who they were, what kind of celeb they were and how they died. You can't generalise on this one, IMO.

Graham1984
No it doesn't make sense to me at all. To put it simply if you are successful/famous and in the public eye/papers ect at any point in your life everyone feels that your success gives them every right to like/love and ridicule you in everything you do/wear/say and even when you die. CJ
Depends on who they were, what kind of celeb they were and how they died. You can't generalise on this one, IMO. I would disagree there. The fact that someone is a perceived drug abuser or died through drugs doesn't IMO, mean the masses have carte blanch to pour scorn and ridicule on them. Again I ask, would we do that to a drug abusing family member or friend of a fellow member? In my experience the masses here are very quick to show sympathy to a fellow member and that to me reeks of double standards and disingenuous attitudes. Graham1984
Isn't that sad though? Yes it is sad except when it is the attention whore me me me types who quite frankly I couldn't give a monkeys about. Maybe some of it stems from jealousy about how their lives are not as good financially ect although quite frankly I don't envy celebrities at all as although the money would be great I would prefer it more with a quiet life minus the public eye/scrutiny. You see, I don't understand that. So, in your opinion, if someone is an attention seeker it is acceptable to make crass jokes about them after their death? Regardless of how that may or may not affect the relatives that remain to pick up the pieces. To me that just doesn't seem right.

The thing with that is where we can talk to people here it makes you feel somewhat connected to that person and their lives and you consider their feelings ect. Say for example someone made a play against you and your health on here everyone would go mental which would be rightly so as people on here know you through msg's and threads, meets or just in person. The difference being that where nobody knows Michael Jackson personally if we started slating him it appears just as it is not effecting anyone personally on here except maybe miffing a few fans of his that have never met him or spoke to him. Marvellous It's an interesting thing this Celebrity death joke thing. There seems to be an unquantifiable amount of time that needs to pass and then they become more acceptable and they can be funny. Too soon though and it it seems very wrong. I wonder how one measures the time differential from tasteless to acceptably funny?

Havard
Apologies for any offence caused. It's a good job I didn't post the other ones up. I thought that celebrities were fair game, especially if they weren't particularly popular or had a reputation for arrogance? H.
