David P
GPS tracking systems get costly, has anyone tried discreetly stashing an old phone on a charger in their car and use a phone locator app?
Guigsy
i think the phone locator apps only work if you have the app on the phone. so it would need to be an android or iphone. which wouldnt be cheep

David P
Thank you, I was sure it would work but I'm not up to speed with trendy phones, what's required to run this Android app?

David P
No hanky panky, I just thought it would be a cheap means of finding who's legs to break if the car went AWOL.
Robzki
Fairly sure I had an 'app' on my nokia n97 a couple of years ago that was pretty good. I had the same thoughts about hiding it in the car but never got round to it. I imagine an n97 could be picked up pretty cheap now.

AJI
GPS tracking systems get costly, has anyone tried discreetly stashing an old phone on a charger in their car and use a phone locator app? The phone stored in the car would have to have a SIM card with available download/upload credit in it I guess? So that when a request is made the phone can then upload its position. Is that how it would work?
ScottC
All you need is iCloud You clever man. If you was to hide the phone under the dash with a perminant 12v supply connected to it, how long do you think the car battery would last? I was thinking more along the lines of leaving a phone suitably hidden when the car was out in the open - as in away from my locked up garage. I could then charge the phone up overnight. Or is that a bit pointless?

I could then charge the phone up overnight. Or is that a bit pointless? That would work but if the car was stolen you would want the phone on for as long as possible. If it was hard wired under the dash on a perminant supply and the theif disconnected the battery the phone would be fully charged. Then just use 'find my iPhone' to track it. David P
The charger could be wired to an ignition feed to charge whilst engine running, yet I have a solar panel to keep the battery topped up for the alarm drain which would probably cope with a phone too. jonathanc
You can keep your phone constantly charged in the car. Just have to wire a live from the ciggy socket. 12v to mini USB. Then all you need is an Android phone, Tasker and GPS Tracker. Root the Android phone to underclock it so battery will last much longer. You can program Tasker to alert you if the car moves at night via text. Also can program Tasker to start the GPS Tracker when the car is moved at certain time etc etc.
