j_jza80
oh one more thing, if it's worn bushings wouldn't it make some clunking noise when driving through bad roads?...cuz i get absolutely no noise through rough roads, only when stopping or turning hard corners at slow speeds.. Depends how 'gone' they are.
RastaMc
I have exactly the same issue at the moment. It's been 6 or 7 years since I got the bolts tightened and it's supposed to be done every 3 years or so according to the service schedule. I suddenly have tramlining and I know it's not the suspension or shocks, the alignment, the tyres or tyre pressures - they have all been done/replaced/checked recently. It is, however, going "clonk" when I reverse at full lock - classic subframe bolts. Do a quick search and you'll find the torque settings for the six or so bolts that need doing. They aren't too high, a normal decent torque wrench will do the trick, I just haven't bothered yet as it's cold outside and I'm not driving the Supra anyway Probably need a re-alignment afterwards though, unless I'm lucky... -Ian Hi guys. I have a weird experience with the Supra, that when I make a Zig Zag movement (very quick) when driving I feel like I'm driving a car half full of water, cause I get a side effect like a wave. In other words, i still feel the zig zag effect after holding the steeing wheel full straight. I thought it were the coil overs (front), thus I have now TEIN super street. After that the problem was still present. I bought a set of Ultra racing rolbar, side and middel frame holders but I don't feel a difference. Now I'm reading this, I would ask you if you have a diagram or draw were I can see which bolts I've to tight. Or is it only bringing the car in the air and tight every bolt I see? Sorry, I'm not so expert in the mechanic of the car. Thank you in advance.
Dnk
I'd get it on a ramp and do a full inspection of all the bushes on the suspension along with the steering and go round all the bolts checking their tight Look in the WSM in the maintainance section, all the bolts are shown in diagrams along with their torque settings. All the bushes etc are shown in the supsension & axle section http://www.turbosupras.com/pages/en/pages/technical/a80tsrm.htm Edited February 15, 2012 by Dnk (see edit history)

Graham1984
Once I've done mine I'll be able to show you how to do yours Graham. 4 post ramp FTW! lol I am just a bit concerned as like stated when I am turning slowly and sharply up and left out of a junction by mine I sometimes get this squeaking/knock sound. I did get my mate to tighten the subframe but he only did the front, Part of the noises I was getting was the exhaust knocking as I was missing one of the rubber hangers from the back. Benjy
Mine's doing exactly what has been described as symptoms of loose bolts. The Supra's gonna think all it's christmas' have come at once with the TLC it'll be getting this year

Ian C
See here for my efforts on this so far: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?263945-Subframe-bolt-disaster I'll take a few pics of which bolts to do when I have another go, seeing as a fair few people are looking to do this. You only need a long 17mm socket btw, the 19mm bolt heads only need a normal socket.
RastaMc
Hi guys. As promissed I report the status of tighting the frame bolts of my Supra. I followed the instructions of the maintanance manual also with the specified torque, but what I saw was that the bolts were very tight. Almost the torque they needed. Only the bolts of the back frame had to be thightened a little bit. However, I feel the same "wave" behaviour when I zig zag with the car. Is there something else to thight? Or to look at? Bushes? Samurai 20V
What you might have there is the dreaded worn suspension bushes Would this qualify as a worn bush?

I'd have checked the bushes/ball joints for play and other bolts for tightness etc at the same time just to rule things out. Has this suddenly started happening or since you've had the car ? A silly one for starters is are all the tyres at the correct pressure and if their directional are they all on the correct way round ? Has this suddenly started happening or since you've had the car ? A silly one for starters is are all the tyres at the correct pressure and if their directional are they all on the correct way round ? I have had this "problem" sinds I've the car. In the beginning I thought it would be coil overs, thus I bought the TEIN Super street. Nothing changed. Then I thouhgt about the front strutbar, thus I bought one. Nothing changed. Then I bought the frame strength bars/arms (Ultra racing set) but the same result. What I didn't do is align the wheels after replacing the coil overs. The car is now about 70 mm lower but I don't know if it got worse after that. Maybe the stabilisator bar in the front?
Dnk
Get the geometry looked at as it'll more than likely be all over the shop. 70mm im suppprised you can drop a supra that much, mines on 30mm lowering springs and thats as far as i'd want to go to be honest. jim
Ian/Dunk, I don't suppose you'd have the torque settings for the subframe bolts please?
Dnk
Not off the top of my head Go onto the homepage of the forum and in the top left corner you'll see the repair manuals button, click on that and it takes you to the Repairs manual page then look in the maintainance section and their in there
Graham1984
After getting my subframe tightened it sorted out the reverse turn knock but I was still getting a squeak at times, I wondered if it was the famous boot rubbers but they didn't look too bad. The other night when I camer home at 2am there were a load of deer having a party in the road so I slammed on the brakes and then the noise came back... Guessing it is a seized caliper or something along them lines now. Cheers for the input on this thread the subframe one was a handy fix. Ian C
So, resurrecting this, I finally made the time to tackle this job. It turned out to be a lot more trouble than it could have been, as the nuts were well and truly siezed on the bolts I plusgas'd them, but there was no access to wire brush the blighters or get heat on them. The top hex heads rounded off at the first attempt to undo them. In the end, me and the angrygrinder had a word, and after a lot of sparks and noise I'd eroded the bolt heads to nothing and knocked the bolts out downwards. Blasted things. New ones went in but the subframe had obviously moved a millimeter or two on the side as the holes were far from lined up and some base primer paint was visible on the chassis underneath where the frame had shifted. I'll get the alignment done when I get time, and get this rectified. -Ian
