carlmhtt
Has anyone used oil additives like STP STOP LEAK, which apparently swells just the seals and can prevent further small leaks. I'm always a bit dubious about such fixes? Carl

tony tt
For a temp fix it may work but in the long term i would replace the problem.

It's from the rear engine seal (crank seal) and just a few drops. It's on my Lexus is ,not my supra. To replace seal would cost £60 for new seal plus £ 240 to fit it as it involves dropping test box etc.
SteveC
Has anyone used oil additives like STP STOP LEAK, which apparently swells just the seals and can prevent further small leaks. I'm always a bit dubious about such fixes? Carl If it's a relatively minor leak where there's a drop of oil every few hours, then one of these seal fixes may have a chance. Going off my experience many years back, when you've a fairly noticeable leak these products do little to no good. The money would probably be much better spent by putting it towards a proper cure. ...and don't forget, if it does actually swell seals, then it's swelling all the seals in the engine including those that weren't causing any problems. I don't think that can be a good thing in the long term.
Attero
When I was 17 and knew nothing about cars, I filled my 106 up with the stuff thinking it was oil. Unfortunately I didn't have any leaks to give you any conclusions. Only that it doesn't work as a replacement for oil.
Chris Wilson
What engine is in the Lexus, if it's a 2JZ i have a job lot of seals, including rear crank seals i am selling 1/3 price. No way would I put something that alters seal texture in the engine oil. Either fix it or live with it would be my advice.

Chris Wilson
It's only seals for the 2JZ series I have, sorry. £500 isn't dear for a diesel clutch, it sounds quite reasonable.
