I currently have a 1.4 8v astra and with most of my journey being less than 10 miles I am struggling to get 30MPG. Can people suggest a new more suitable car for me that will give me better MPG on short journeys, budget is around 500. Usual criteria apply cheap, reliable etc

Smaller the better mate. Petrol probably works better over shorter distances. Fiesta or Polo?

After looking I think as you said its got to be a small petrol, after looking the 1.0L Suzuki Swift seems to be the most economical but what are they like?

I really like the Swift. Under-rated cars. In fact I took delivery of a brand new one today.

It claims 42MPG urban and 60+ on a run. I don't think you can get more economical than that for the budget I have. There is one I am looking at and will probably go look at it tomorrow.

My daily is a Corsa, has a small petrol engine and I get great economy around town :) I do around 30 miles a day town driving (mon-fri) and a full tank lasts me just under 3 weeks ish (£50 to fill up). Not fast and not a looker but I don't mind as I know what I have in the garage at home :D

Update on this, after looking for ages I finally got myself a Suzuki Swift. Its a 52 plate with FSSH up to 40K, loads of receipts and has done a total of less than 55K miles. Its a 1.0 GLS model but it is apparently a Special Edition model as it comes with CL, ABS, PAS, EW, EM, spoiler and Bucket Seats which are actually really comfy plus they are very body hugging too. Its got two speakers mounted on the parcel shelf and aftermarket ones in the front which are quite good clarity. It had some work done to it last year inlcuding brand new front suspension replaced by Suzuki because of a recall, new clutch, new engine mounts, new battery and has 5 good tyres. I got it with 10 months tax and the only downside is MOT runs out this month but there were no advisories on the last MOT so hopefully should be ok. There are a few scuffs on the paintwork but nothing major and its just had a full service.

How much did you pay for this I hear you ask ?

Wow, bargain!

I was looking at Swifts but I'd want the newer shape one as the older ones look too... old!

Good buy though dude. Now I need to pull my finger out and get myself another run around.

I bought a shite polo for the exact same reason you did.

3 Weeks later I got bored and put a G40 1.3 supercharged engine in it, now it goes like stink and still get 5 days driving for 35 quid. 160bhp in a little car is mucho fun, And the sleeper factor comes into place as well :D

I was actually quite suprised at how nippy it is, it might only be a 3 cylinder but it weighs nothing so is actually not that bad to drive. Plus it only cost 95 quid to tax due to it being post march 2001.
